If your password has already expired, you won’t be able to log in until you reset it at reset-password.mmu.ac.uk.

Worried that someone else knows your password?

If you have any reason to believe that your password has been compromised, you should change your password immediately to minimise any further risk to your account, and also contact the IT Helpline.

  • Tips on storing your password securely

We encourage the use of password management systems, such as LastPass, Dashlane or KeePass. They allow you to use very strong, unique passwords, without having to remember each one.

If you have questions about this, please contact the Information Security team at [email protected].

  • Cannot contain words that are common or too easily guessed, such as ‘Manchester’ or ‘university’
Guidance for staff

Requirements:

  • Must contain at least 16 characters.
  • Complexity is not required, ie. there is no need for uppercase, digits or special characters (you can still use these if you like).
  • Cannot contain any personal information, such as a name or date of birth
  • Cannot contain inappropriate or offensive language, or the word ‘password’ or similar variations (PasswordPassword / Passw0rd)
  • Cannot contain words that are common or too easily guessed, such as ‘Manchester’ or ‘university’

Passphrase top tips

  • Develop a passphrase that is easy for you to remember, but hard to guess.
  • Choose a string of three or four words that build a picture in your mind
  • Avoid obvious passwords or incremental passwords e.g. Passw0rd1, Roaming1 and then Roaming2
  • Avoid discoverable information such as significant dates, names, places or famous quotations unless you disguise it with complex characters
  • Use a passphrase that is easy for you to remember and type accurately

Further advice on setting strong passphrases is available on the National Cyber Security Centre webpage.

New students: Register for Self Service Password Reset

The first time you log into a university system in a web browser, you’ll be prompted to register your password with the message ‘More information required’. You can do this by following the on-screen instructions, or with the guidance below. Once you’ve done this, you can reset your password yourself in future.

Alternatively, you can register now by going straight to https://register-password.mmu.ac.uk

When registering your University password, you will be asked how you want to receive authentication requests. This will be used to confirm your identity, if you ever want to reset or change your University password without contacting our IT Helpline.

We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app. You can find guidance for setting up the Authenticator app on your phone below.
