Frequently asked questions
-
If I didn’t apply for a student loan, can I still apply for a scholarship?
You can still apply for a scholarship if you do not have a student loan.
But you will need to apply to Student Finance for a means test, which will give you a student support number.
To do this, you must:
- Download and complete the PN1 application form, including the parental household income section
- Either:
- enter £0 in the loan request section
- or write a cover letter requesting a household income assessment, instead of processing any loan application
It can take more than six weeks for Student Finance to check your ID and verify your eligibility. If it is confirmed, you will get your student support number.
You can apply for scholarships while you are waiting to hear back from Student Finance.
If you are eligible, you can use your student support number to apply for the University’s student support package.
If you need help with the process, please contact us.
-
What if I get scholarship and have already paid my fees?
If you have a tuition fee loan in place to cover your fees and would like to use a scholarship to help reduce your loan, you can let us know and we will contact the Student Loans Company to reduce your loan by the scholarship amount.
If you are a self-paying student and would like to use this scholarship towards paying your fees, you can let us know and we will arrange this for you.
If you are a self-paying student and have paid your tuition fees in full for the academic year, we will refund the scholarship amount back to you.
-
How do I find my student support number?
Your SSN will be given to you by the Student Loans Company, Student Finance England/Wales/Northern Ireland, and your local education authority.
It usually consists of four letters, followed by eight numbers and another letter (such as SFDU01234567A).
Your SSN appears on your university or college payment advice letter, usually underneath the barcode at the top of the letter. You can also find it by logging into your student finance account.
If you cannot find your number, you will need to contact your relevant student finance organisation:
- Student Finance England
- Student Finance Wales
- Student Finance Northern Ireland
- Student Awards Agency Scotland
-
Does receiving a scholarship impact my student finance eligibility?
Receiving a donor-funded scholarship will not impact your eligibility to receive a tuition fee and/or a maintenance loan and will not impact the amount you receive from the Student Loans Company. Any donor-funded scholarship awarded is paid in addition to any support received from the Student Loans Company.
