About this scholarship

Two scholarships were named after two of the most important figures in Manchester United history and honorary graduates of the University —Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton. Check if you’re eligible, and how to apply.

  • Value: Full tuition fee waiver and a cash bursary of £1,500 per year for three years.
  • Study level: Undergraduate — new, full-time students in their first year only
  • Eligible courses: BSc (Hons) Sport and Youth Leadership course.

You can only apply for this scholarship if we’ve offered you a place at Manchester Met.

Deadlines for applying: 

  • If we offer you a place, you must apply for the scholarship by 31 August 2024.

Aim of the scholarship

Set up in partnership with donations from the Manchester United Foundation, the Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton Scholarships aims to support students who have faced extra challenges in their lives — such as being the main carer in a family, living with a disability or currently being in receipt of free school meals — with the tools and skills they need to help transform young lives through football. 

Check if you can apply

To apply, you must: 

  • hold a firm offer to study a new full-time BSc (Hons) Sport and Youth Leadership course in 2024/25
  • have a household income of £42,875 or less. We’ll check this against your Student Finance application. Please contact us if you will not be applying to Student Finance for a maintenance loan
  • be a UK student (English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish) paying fees of £9,250, and have a UK Student Support Number
  • pay for your course yourself, including through a student loan or a payment from your parents. Your course fees must not be paid by a business, charity or other organisation

You will also need to satisfy one of these criteria:

  • be a First Generation student (from a family where neither your parent(s) or guardian(s) attended university and got an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in the UK or abroad)
  • have experience of local authority care
  • be a main carer for a family member or dependent
  • get disability benefits
  • get the Education Maintenance Allowance or free school meals
  • permanently live in an area of high deprivation and low participation in higher education. (You can check your postcode at the OfS postcode search. Priority will be for those in the lowest POLAR4 young participation quintile)
  • be irreconcilably estranged from your parents or not have communicated with them for at least a year before you intend to start your degree

  • complete the application form, applications open 1 January 2024.

You must apply by 31 August 2024. We will not consider late applications.

If we get a lot of applications, we may ask you to do an interview. The interview will be online in September.
