How to get feedback on your writing

Everyone can benefit from a fresh pair of eyes when it comes to writing.

Writing Feedback: how our Academic and Study Skills Tutors can help

We can provide you with some developmental feedback before submitting an essay, assignment or dissertation. We can help with a range of queries and show you where to go for further support if required.

To use the feedback service and ensure you get the most from our advice, you’ll need to work through this online resource.

Once you’ve completed the resource, you’ll be provided with a submission link to share your draft with us.

Feedback is provided by our Academic and Study Skills Tutors, not a subject specialist for your course. This means when submitting work, you might ask us to focus on areas such as academic writing style, grammar, data analysis, or criticality in writing. We’ll review a sample of your work and provide enough feedback based on your request for you to apply our comments to the rest of your assignment. If you have follow-up questions, please get back in touch with us.

Please note this is not a proofreading service: it’s designed to help you identify areas for development and learn how to correct them.

If you encounter issues with accessing the online resource, please email us at [email protected]. Alternatively, if you’d prefer, you can arrange a one-to-one appointment to discuss aspects of your work.

  • What can I submit?

You can submit a plan, draft, or extract of your writing. We can also provide feedback on different formats (such as posters or presentations), but please note that our focus will be on areas such as clarity and structure. For maths and stats requests, we can focus on areas of your work such as statistical analysis and interpretation of results. As our feedback is designed to be developmental, we’ll typically look at a sample of your work to provide feedback that you can confidently apply elsewhere.

For larger projects, such as dissertations, we won’t provide feedback across all sections. If you asked for feedback on clarity, for instance, we would not feedback on this across your entire assignment. Instead, you should consider if there are certain sections where feedback would be useful, or it might be that you have different queries for different parts of your work.

  • How do I send in my work?

To gain developmental feedback on your work, you need to work through this online resource. Once completed, you will have access to a link to upload your assignment brief, a draft of your work, and to guide us in the focus for our feedback. If you encounter any issues with this online resource, please email us at [email protected].

  • How long does it take for you to provide feedback?

We aim to provide feedback within four working days (Monday to Friday). Please factor this timescale in when submitting your work to us. All feedback is placed into a queue, and we respond to each submission in order of receipt. We don’t prioritise requests based on your deadline.

In line with the above, we cannot provide feedback on work with a deadline on the same or the next working day. Our feedback is developmental, meaning you wouldn’t be able to use it for last-minute changes to your work.

We also have closure periods during the academic year when we cannot accept submissions. These are during the University’s closure period over the winter break and also Good Friday and Easter Monday. We are closed on all English Bank Holidays too. It’s important that you plan your time effectively to make the most of writing feedback.

  • Will a tutor proofread my whole assignment?

Our tutors will not proofread your assignments. Instead, our advice is designed to help you identify areas for development and to learn how to correct them. We’ll look at a sample of your work to provide feedback that you can apply elsewhere.

Similarly, our tutors will not correct your work. They will provide developmental comments within your text to prompt your thinking on the topic.

  • Who can get writing feedback from the Academic and Study Skills team?

All registered students at Manchester Met can make use of the writing feedback service provided by the Academic and Study Skills team.

  • How many times can I submit my work for writing feedback?

You can submit your work up to five times for either:

    • academic writing support
    • ormaths and statistics support

Once you reach five submissions, you’ll be asked to book a one-to-one appointment before using our writing feedback service again.

This is so we can chat with you about the feedback you’ve already received to see if other aspects of our provision might be beneficial, including our workshops and short courses.

After your one-to-one appointment, you may submit up to a further three pieces of work for writing feedback before we ask you to book another one-to-one appointment to discuss your learning. We would follow the same steps after you’ve submitted a further two pieces. We wouldn’t expect you to use the service more than ten times during an academic year.

Please note that these stages are separate for writing support and maths and stats support. You’re also very welcome to book a one-to-one appointment at any point if you have any questions you’d like to discuss in more depth with an Academic and Study Skills Tutor.

Studiosity

Studiosity: available for foundation, first year undergraduate and level 7 apprentice students only

We know it can sometimes be hard for new students to adapt and transition from school or college to academic writing at university level, so we’ve connected with Studiosity, an external online service, accessed via Moodle. Studiosity will review your draft work for coursework-style assessments and give you quick feedback about how to improve your academic writing style. Read the Studiosity Privacy Notice.

Studiosity is provided in addition to the academic study skills support offered as part of your course and from the Learner Development team.

  • What is Studiosity?

Studiosity is available 24/7, 365 days a year and offers general writing feedback on any stage of your coursework-style assessment draft from 500 to 5500 words.

As a starting point for feedback on your writing at university, they will provide feedback on key elements of academic writing, such as grammar, punctuation, language and structure.

It is available for each foundation year, first year undergraduate, and level 7 apprenticeship student to make up to ten submissions during the academic year.

  • Are there any limitations on the feedback from Studiosity?

    Studiosity is not:

    • Able to give an indication of the mark or grade you will receive when assessed by your Manchester Met tutors.
    • A replacement for using the University-based support provided by tutors and academic study skills experts.
    • A marking or proofreading service.
    • Able to correct every error in your work, or able to identify every area requiring development.
    • Subject-specific. An academic writing specialist, not someone with knowledge of your course or topic, will review your work.
    • Able to provide feedback on course-specific referencing, only general referencing advice. Seek advice on referencing from your tutor or the Library.
    • Able to check your work for instances of plagiarism. (Visit Skills Online on Moodle to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.)
    • Able to make suggestions when the work is exam based.
    • Staffed by Manchester Met staff.
  • Who can use Studiosity?

This service is offered to foundation year, first year undergraduate and level 7 apprentice students to support their transition to university and be successful at academic writing. Elligible students can submit up to ten pieces of written work. It is provided in addition to the dedicated academic study skills support offered to all Manchester Met students as part of their course, and from the University’s Learner Development team, and in addition to the Coaching for Academic English offered to international students.

  • How long will it take to receive feedback?

You should receive feedback on your writing within 24 hours of uploading it. The Studiosity system alerts you to the feedback return time before you upload a document. You will receive an email notification when your feedback has been completed and is ready for you to read.

  • How do I submit to Studiosity?

Watch this short video to see how to log in and submit your work.
