All Manchester Metropolitan University students have the right to be free from any form of discrimination or hate.  The University is committed to making a positive response to any student who reports being the victim of a hate incident and it is vital that you feel able and supported report any such incidents. 

  • What is Hate Incident?

    A hate incident is any act targeted at a person, or a person’s property, because of hostility or prejudice in relation to:

    • disability
    • race or ethnicity
    • religion or belief
    • sexual orientation
    • transgender identity
    • alternative sub-culture
    • any perceived difference.

    Hate crimes and incidents take many different forms and are not necessarily acts of physical violence. Some examples of hate incidents include:-

    • verbal abuse such as name-calling and offensive jokes
    • harassment
    • bullying or intimidation by children, adults, neighbours or strangers
    • physical attacks such as hitting, punching, pushing, spitting
    • threats of violence
    • hoax calls, abusive phone or text messages, hate mail
    • online abuse, for example on Facebook or Twitter
    • displaying or circulating discriminatory literature or posters
    • harm or damage to things such as the individual’s home, pet, or vehicle
    • graffiti
    • arson
    • malicious complaints, for example over parking, smells or noise.

    You may feel uncertain as to whether you have been victim of a hate incident, or you may feel that what you have experienced is almost a daily occurrence. In each case you should feel able to make a report so that you can access support and advice.

  • Reporting a Hate Incident

    If you feel that you have been subject to a hate incident, or if you feel you may have been subject to a hate incident but feel unsure, you have a number of options as to how to make a report.  

    Please note - if you feel in immediate danger: 

    • Call the Police on 999. 

    • Contact Campus Security on 0161 247 2222 or via the SafeZone App

    You have a number of options for reporting the hate incident, which includes reporting through Manchester Metropolitan University or external agencies. 

    Manchester Metropolitan University Report and Support 

    Report and Support is the University reporting tool which you can use to report hate incidents. When you make your report you have the choice of sharing your name and details or of making an anonymous report. If you make an anonymous report the details of the incident will be recorded and you will receive on-line advice. The University will use your report to monitor hate incidents and we will keep a record of the incident. However because you have submitted an anonymous report we will be unable to provide additional support. 

    If you choose to provide your personal details, specially trained staff from the University will contact you to offer support and discuss your options. 

    Greater Manchester Police (GMP) or Manchester City Council

    You can contact call GMP directly:

    • Call Greater Manchester Police on 101. 
    • Call the Manchester City Council Hate Crime Report Line on 08000 830 007.

    • Report online to the police either anonymously or to have an officer contact you via the True Vision page.

    If you prefer to take this approach the University will not have a record of the incident, although you may choose to contact GMP and also complete Report and Support.  

    Please remember that if you require an immediate response because you feel in danger you should call 999. You may also call Campus Security 0161 247 2222. 

    Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service

    Manchester Metropolitan University Student Union Advice Centre 

    The Student Union Advice Centre is also a Hate Crime Reporting Centre and in addition to supporting you to report a hate crime or incident, will offer you free, confidential and independent service on campus offering specialist  student-centred advice

    Manchester Metropolitan University Chaplain 

    Support and advice is also available from the University Chaplain, Mohammed Ullah. The Chaplain may be approached at any time when on campus or by email [email protected]  

    Manchester Metropolitan University Complaints Process – Student Case Management 

    If the alleged perpetrator of the hate incident is another student or a member of staff you may pursue the Student Complaints Procedure. Wellbeing Advisors and the Student Union Advice Centre can also provide advice on this process. 

  • Other sources of support

    A number of other organisations also receive reports of hate incidents and provide useful advice, including:- 

    • GALOP –anti LGBTQ + hate incidents 

At all times, the University will, in the course of interpreting and implementing this procedure, have regard for its obligations to secure freedom of speech and academic freedom within the law for its students, staff, members and visiting speakers as described in the Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech.
