Introduction

If your income is lower than your essential outgoings, or if you have recently had an unexpected cost, you can apply for Day to Day Support.

Find out if you’re eligible, how much you could receive and how to apply.

How it works

Eligibility

All our students can apply. There’s a limited annual budget available, so not all applications are successful.

If you’re studying the UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, you can still apply, but you’ll be expected to apply for one of our Further Education Bursaries first before accessing Day to Day Support.

Applications

To apply, you must:

  1. Sign in to the Digital Student Hub
  2. Select Financial Support, Day to Day Support
  3. Select ‘Create Day to Day Support Request’
  4. Complete the application form

Applications are open between 2 September 2024 and 9 May 2025.

You should apply as early as possible as funds are limited.

If you’re a final-year student, you must apply at least 12 weeks before the end of your course (and within the application period).

If you need help, please visit our application guide.

Assessment

We aim to assess applications within four weeks. It can take longer in busy periods, or if your case is complex and we need additional information. Please check your student email for updates.

We assess each application using detailed assessment guidance. Once your application has been processed, we will email you a report outlining our assessment.

For most students, our assessment will consider:

  • how your income compares to your essential costs
  • any exceptional circumstances or unexpected costs

If you are a postgraduate or international student, you are likely to be assessed as a self-funded. Self-funded students can still apply, but we will only consider unexpected costs or events. If you think you might be assessed as a self-funded, we strongly recommend you contact us before you apply.

Priority groups

We prioritise some groups, including:

  • disabled students
  • students with children (especially lone parents)
  • carers
  • care leavers
  • students who are estranged from their family
  • final year students
  • students from low-income backgrounds

Being a member of one or more of these priority groups does not guarantee a payment.

Payments

If your application is successful, you’ll receive a payment between £100 and £3,000.

We’ll email you with confirmation of your payment.

You’ll be paid into the UK bank account given on your application form.

Several factors can affect how much we offer you, including the number of applications received and our budget.

Not all applications are successful. If you’re unsuccessful, we’ll offer advice on other support available.

We’re unable to help any student with the cost of tuition fees.

Reviews and appeals

Day to Day Support is not guaranteed. If we do not give you a payment, we will explain why in your assessment report.

We have strict rules about what we can and cannot include in our assessments, so we may not be able to consider every cost that you have included in your application.

If you feel we have made an error in our assessment, please call the Student Financial Support Helpline on 0161 247 1045 within two weeks of receiving your decision email. We will provide more information about how we reached our decision.

Following the call, if you still feel that we have made an error in our assessment, we will explain how to submit your review.

Following the review, if you remain dissatisfied, you can request an appeal.
