Our core aims and values
We’ll:
- prioritise and scrutinise departmental progress against actions to close the awarding gap by 2030
- create a framework that will ensure a standardised approach to tackling the awarding gap
- create safe spaces and champion dialogue on inclusive learning and teaching environments
- increase students’ sense of belonging and build meaningful relationships between students and staff, through the development of internal and external networks
- enable students to tackle the negative effects of stereotyping and micro-aggressions and safely challenge forms of discrimination on campus
- empower students to make their own change and influence key decision makers in the University through campaigning and other representative functions
Our commitment to you
We’ll meet with departments at least twice a semester to monitor progress and the impact of actions tackling the awarding gap of Black and minority ethnic (BAME) students. We’ll also develop and deliver campaigns and events for students related to the BAME student causes, as well as linking with university staff and the Union to feedback students’ views to influence positive change on campus and on courses. We commit to improve BAME students’ experience and academic outcomes through a series of student-led initiatives and engagement and by:
- treating all students with respect and provide friendly, professional, and efficient support advice and guidance
- listening and responding to your views in order make change happen
- celebrating and increasing the visibility of our Black and Asian staff and students through ongoing campaigns and events
- providing opportunities to gain confidence, make friends and cultivate meaningful communities
- developing pathways for you to achieve better results in assignments or modules, including through the peer assisted learning scheme where available
- working with your faculty to ensure that your learning environment is truly inclusive
