My profile
Biography
Hi I’m Sam! I’ve had a career in higher education focusing on reducing inequalities and shedding light on underrepresented students’ experiences. I have a deep passion for education and social justice, equality and the power of learning, teaching and academic development. I’m a third space #Pracademic, weaving together practice and scholarly activity. I have extensive experience supporting and developing other’s career development and growth.
I have dedicated my career to driving greater equity, diversity and inclusion. Starting out in student support services, I gained frontline experience of the real challenges facing staff and students in a diverse range of services and teaching models, which inspired me to start my PhD research. Since then I have grown my career and I am now a Senior Lecturer in Academic Development at Manchester Metropolitain’s Universty Teaching Academy. I have developed a national and international reputation in this field, with a range of examples of academic citizenship where my research has been incorporated into policy and practice. This has been recognised through my Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
What I do
Interests and expertise
I am always open to opportunities to research and collaborate. Currently, I am developing my newer research and writing around two areas:
- Academic Development and Practice, specifically making visible the activity of the academic developer in realising and bringing to life policy in practice.
- Exploring the learning experiences of Neurodiverse students, and how they are recognised in practice in HE from a sociological and pedagogical perspective.
My general specialisms and research interests include quality, equity, social justice, and
inclusion in higher education; widening participation; education policy; lifelong
learning; education research methodology; pedagogy and curriculum development;
as well as the evaluation and impact of educational interventions.
Theoretically, I am influenced by Nancy Fraser and her theories of recognition, evaluating claims for social justice through the lens of perspectival dualism.
I have also worked extensively on evaluation in the context of access and participation, focusing on change and the development of the ‘Theory of Change approach in UK Higher Education.
Projects
Projects at my previous insitutions include:
- Leader: Raising Awareness Raising Aspiration (RARA) (Grant: HEFCE £0.5 Million)
This project involves working in a partnership led by the University of Sheffield, with King’s College London and the University of Portsmouth. This project seeks to redevelop personal tutoring practices at each institution with the aim to reduce the unexplained attainment gap experienced by students from BME and lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Leader: Should I stay, or Should I go? (Grant: HEFCE £10,000)
A research report into student mobility and credit transfer and recommendations for institutions and the sector. This project (research
report attached) sought to explore from the perspective of students, the potential implications of government proposals around easier credit transfer. Partnership with 7 HEI’s across the North, the White Rose Consortium, and Yorkshire Universities.
- Grant Author: Recognising Equivalent Qualifications (Grant: HEFCE £50,000)
A project which sought to build greater recognition of the skills and abilities of BTEC students through a cultural exchange between paired FE colleges and university faculties and pedagogical developments. Partnership with Barnsley College and 11 Schools, HEPP+SY (NCOP), and Pearson.
- Grant Author & Post-Award Evaluator: Developing Design Consultants for the
Future (DDCF) (Grant: HEFCE: £50,000)
This project sought to employ new tools in the learning and teaching of design, to respond to strategic needs and industrial strategy
developments.
- Grant Author & Post-Award Evaluator: Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research
Projects (Grant: £50,000)
This project sought to introduce second year undergraduate students to interdisciplinary research through summer projects.
