International Business Management

This module provides a critical overview of the major theoretical approaches in the international business domain. The module examines both the differences and the scope for complementarities between alternative means of thinking about international business activities of firms.

International capital flows are key aspects to the financing of development. This module explores the fundamentals of international finance and key issues in development finance, and the opportunities and challenges they present to development initiatives.

This module examines the corporate political activities of firms within the global context. Using analytical frameworks derived from the fields of international political economy and international business, the module examines how and why firms interact with international institutions, national governments and civil society on a range of contemporary issues.

This module examines theoretical aspects of growth and development in order to address how markets emerge. The module will consider the economic development and business environment of selected markets.

This module will focus on the application of international business strategy and management theories to the international activities of firms within the global context. The module provides an introduction to key concepts in international business strategy, and explores the connection between international management, multinational strategy, corporate social responsibility, global value chains, strategic alliances, networks, and sustainable development.

This module provides an understanding of the main methodologies used in research. It also provides an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses associated with different research techniques, and the production, meaning and use of data. This module will lead to the development of a research plan and proposal (research problem and methodology) for the dissertation research project.

The dissertation module provides the student with an opportunity to apply their learning from the programme to plan and execute an individual supervised research project. This will involve choosing a topic from the related literature, developing a research question, planning and designing a research process and reporting the research findings.

The module will equip students with skills and knowledge relating to the handling and analysis of data typically generated by organisations. Students will be introduced to the concept of self-service business intelligence and what impact this will have on their future career path.

The overarching theme of the module will be to consider the core principles of business analytics: How can organisations make sense of all their data? How can data be harnessed to effectively support the decision making process? In what ways can actionable information be created and communicated?

Project management has emerged as a contemporary, key management discipline supporting organisations to achieve their strategic goals in a constantly evolving business ecosystem complicated by risks, uncertainties and competitor pressures. Globalisation of businesses and economies introduce additional complexity levels intrinsic to management of large-scale geographically distributed project teams. This module introduces students to the latest principles and cutting-edge thinking relating to the management of projects within and across organisations. It also covers how project and programme management can be adopted as a strategic tool in organisations to provide value added services within the context of innovation, value, and client satisfaction within common overarching constraints of time, cost and quality. Students are given the opportunity to study risk, change management, resource and budgetary management as well as quality assurance from a project lifecycle perspective.
