Learn how to critically evaluate diverse policy issues and how to address them using economic tools and concepts.
As a professional economist or an economic analyst, you could be working on some of society’s biggest questions. Questions like how do we strengthen local economies, what do we need to do to alleviate poverty in the UK and developing countries, how do we decide which cancer treatments to fund, how can we understand the potential of new technologies?
This masters is designed to equip you with the skills to influence and advise on the important decisions we face. It will prepare you for a career as an economic analyst in civil service, finance, and health sectors, as well as position you to move into further research programmes (such as a PhD in Economics).
Aimed at those who have studied economics and are looking to focus their knowledge toward practical application, while also open...
1 year full-time
By thinking rigorously about costs and benefits, incentives and human behaviour, you’ll consider the likely consequences of the choices made by individuals, businesses and policymakers.
Throughout the course, you’ll develop the technical skills to inform economic decisions and predict possible outcomes. You’ll be taught how to make informed evidence-based decisions to assess economic situations, and the impact of key public policy questions in real-world circumstances.
Practical application is at the heart of this course, supported by appropriate theoretical and statistical considerations. This masters is designed to directly prepare you to work in a professional economist role or undertake further research - with core modules on policy design and analysis, questions of sustainability and quantitative modelling of progress.
You’ll start by covering the foundations of both macroeconomic policy and microeconomic analysis. You’ll then go on to develop the core practical skills in applied economic analysis that are highly valued by employers, enabling you to solve an economic problem for a real-world client.
Using specialist statistical software, you’ll get to grips with the quantitative skills that are fundamental to applied economics. By learning about the application of economics to specific policy areas, such as tax, local economic development, health and education, you’ll gain specialist knowledge to develop further in your dissertation, and future career aspirations.
The course culminates in you drawing together your learning into a self-directed piece of research. Using a 'what works' evidence-based approach you will undertake a lengthy piece of research into a policy question that you find interesting.
