Before you start thinking about which university to apply to, it’s a good idea to reflect on whether going to university is actually the right thing for you.

We think university is a great place to learn, meet new people and experience different things, but everyone’s circumstances are different.

This section will give you the information you need to make your decision.

  • Learn about something you love

An undergraduate degree gives you the opportunity to spend three years studying a subject you love. Whatever you’re passionate about, you’ll be working with teachers who are experts in their fields. You’ll also be able to choose modules which help you focus on the areas which interest you most.

  • Boost your career prospects

A university degree can be the first step towards your dream career, and a great boost for your employment prospects. And that doesn’t just mean vocational courses like nursing degrees or teacher training.

    Research shows that:

    • 91% of our graduates are employed/in further education approximately 15 months after graduation*
    • a degree from a UK university increases a person’s net earnings by £100k or more on average over their lifetime**

You’ll also have the opportunity to build up experience while you study. We have strong links with businesses in the North West, and many of our courses offer work placements.

This doesn’t even stop when you graduate - our careers service will continue to support you throughout your working life.

  • Discover new experiences

At university, learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom. Going to university can be your first taste of independence. You’ll meet new people, build your self-confidence, and have opportunities to try new things. Beyond halls of residence and lecture theatres, the Students’ Union is the hub of university life, with hundreds of clubs and societies where you can pursue hobbies and interests with like-minded people.

Many of our courses offer the opportunity to study abroad, if you want to broaden your horizons even further. We also offer opportunities for volunteering and learning new skills, including our award-winning RISE programme. RISE is an innovative scheme that allows you to learn new skills outside of your degree course and shape your future career. You could volunteer locally or abroad, gain work experience or learn a new language, all while earning credits towards your degree.
