Most programming languages have similar basic constructs for building logic within them. In this module, students will learn some of these constructs or concepts - including variables, data types, decision and looping structures, basic algorithms, arrays, structured programming and reuse of code. Students will use the C# language because its syntax is similar to Java and C++, which are popular languages used in industry.
It is important for students in this programme to engage with employers from a variety of sectors to gain insight into future careers in the field of business technology. The module will enable students to identify and develop specific skills and attributes required to gain employment and succeed within their chosen profession. This includes developing a strong CV, connecting with like-minded professionals, and also completing the bronze level of the iDEA Digital Enterprise Awards.
Data is considered to be the "new oil" in today’s digital world. This module examines the nature of data and introduces students to current systems and technologies used to effectively and safely manage and utilise the various types of data. We evaluate how data management enables data analytics, which in turn provides key insights to support the decision-making process.
The field of technological advancements and societal development is largely driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0. This module introduces students to contemporary developments in this area and reviews the disruptive and transformative technologies, which are driving technological change and underpinning Industry 4.0. It also takes account of the changing and developing landscape for new socioeconomic, political and societal models.
Businesses today are operating in a highly complex and dynamic landscape. This module introduces students to contemporary business/e-business and the factors that shape the nature of businesses operating in an increasingly complex global market. Students will be exposed to a range of relevant tools and frameworks to analyse the impact of dynamic business landscape and volatile global markets on a business's ability to compete successfully.
System analysis and design involves planning the development of information systems through understanding and specifying in detail what a system should do. This module introduces tools and techniques for analysing identified business requirements of Information Technology and Information Systems and translating these into Information Technology Systems requirements.
Information systems are basically processors of data into information for specific business uses. It is important to understand the role of stakeholders in influencing system requirements and technology adoption. This module introduces fundamental concepts of data, information, knowledge, systems and information systems. Students develop appreciation of businesses working as sociotechnical systems in their business environment, and how to evaluate these to identify technical requirements.
HTML, JavaScript and CSS are core technologies used in building most websites. They are platform-independent and browser-independent. In this module, students will learn how to use these technologies to develop responsive websites. The programming languages used will be the same as those used in the Programming Fundamentals module.
Our BSc (Hons) Business Technology degree offers the chance to spend a year getting a taste of professional life. It not only gives you the opportunity to develop your core skills and learn about how a business really operates in your industry, but also shows employers that you’re ready to get to work.

Study abroad
Instead of a placement, you’ll have the opportunity to spend up to a year overseas, studying with one of our partner institutions across Europe, or beyond. Go abroad in the third year of your degree, and you’ll not only learn about other cultures, improve your language skills and discover more about yourself – you’ll also boost your career prospects.
Having first-hand knowledge of another country’s culture and traditions can take you far in a range of careers. And, by going abroad, you’ll also demonstrate the kind of independent spirit and adaptability that many employers want.
Working abroad
Gaining work experience with an international flavour offers a double benefit. While you’ll learn valuable professional skills in a real-world workplace, you’ll also experience different cultures, ways of working and new perspectives. Whether it’s a summer exchange, holiday internship or year-long international placement, global experience can make a world of difference to your career prospects.
You will study six core 15-credit units; please see below. In addition, you will choose two 15 credit optional units. Please note that the following list of modules is indicative and may be subject to change.
Databases are widely applied in the querying and construction of complex datasets. This module introduces students to structured query language (SQL), which is largely used for manipulating data in contemporary relational database management systems and describes how to craft simple and complex queries for analysing and transforming data.
The rapid pace in technological development has created ethical dilemmas for organisations and poses significant challenges for regulatory bodies. This module introduces students to some guiding principles around technology regulations, ethics, sustainability and security that influence how both individuals and businesses make decisions in relation to technology adoption.
This module is aimed at young professionals who are likely to have some responsibility for managing technology at some stage in their career, which may include hardware, software, implementation, procurement, maintenance or security. Because the world of technology changes so rapidly, this is a practitioner-based, rather than a theoretical module. A wide range of issues are covered, from risk management, through project planning, implementation, procurement, and security. The assignment is based on a real-world business problem and is individually assessed.
Technology managers face unique challenges and risks when leading technical project teams to deliver solutions that address strategic needs and provide stakeholder value. This module introduces students to the general principles of managing technology projects and focuses on the tools, techniques, and skills required to apply the IS/IT success strategies to managing tech projects.
Decision-making in today’s digital era is a complex task: decision-response speed has increased, data overload is common, and information distortion hinders effective decision-making. As a result, there is a greater emphasis on evidence-based decision-making. This module assesses how computerised decision support systems (DSS) support business and organisational decision-making activities. DSS help decision-makers compile useful information from raw data, documents, personal knowledge, and business models in order to identify and solve problems and make the right decisions.
Cloud Computing is a metaphor for internet-based delivery of computing resources on a scalable basis. It is a model which provides on-demand access to shared resources. This module introduces students to various cloud service and deployment models, such as AWS, cloud infrastructure and cloud reference models.
