Sport and Exercise Science (Distance Learning)

This module provides an introduction to exercise physiology and metabolism, including anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine and neural systems, as well as bioenergetics and metabolism. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge through theory and application of this in practical contexts. 

This module provides an introduction to human musculoskeletal anatomy and biomechanical principles relevant to human movement during sport and exercise. Students will develop an understanding of fundamental techniques of movement measurement, description and quantification. 

This module provides an introduction to the theories and principles of sport and exercise psychology. Using themes relating to social psychology, cognitive psychology, motor skill acquisition, and mental skills training, students will develop an understanding of contemporary issues from real-world scenarios. 

This module provides an introduction to the practical laboratory skills relevant in sport and exercise physiology, biomechanics and psychology. Students will apply the theoretical knowledge of these key disciplines to real-world scenarios in practice by working in small groups. Emphasis will be on using contemporary measurement techniques, appropriate methods of data analysis and data interpretation and translation of this information for diverse audiences. 

This module advances students’ practical laboratory skills for application to different sport and exercise science contexts. Working in multidisciplinary teams, students will apply the theoretical knowledge of physiology, biomechanics and psychology to a real-world sport and exercise case study. Students will evaluate contemporary research and practice to design and conduct evidence-based client needs analyses and assessments to inform the provision of client-appropriate feedback. 

This module explores how the theoretical underpinnings of sport and exercise psychology can be applied to analyse and evaluate across themes such as expertise and skill learning, performance in health.

This module explores how knowledge of the fundamental physiological systems and metabolism can be applied to analyse and evaluate performance in sport and exercise, and in response to physical (in)activity and environmental stressors using real-world scenarios and contemporary measurement techniques. 

This module explores biomechanical principles relevant to human movement during sport and exercise, including the analysis and evaluation of contemporary biomechanical and performance measurement techniques and how these could be applied to real-world scenarios. 

This module provides a platform to complement and enhance potential student outcomes associated with different types of research and study design. 

This module focuses on the key skills for planning research, including searching and reviewing literature, and analysis of research methods in sport and exercise science. Emphasis is on developing and refining skills of critical analysis, personal reflection, study design, and use of methods of ethical, reliable and valid data collection. 

This module develops further the knowledge gained at Level 5 by taking an overview of the training process for elite athletes and teams. The theoretical and analytical basis of daily, weekly and annual planning is examined in detail.

This module introduces you to the aetiology and management of sports injuries. It builds upon your existing knowledge of the sport and exercise sciences and develops the concepts of interdisciplinary sport science and medicine support at all levels of sport and exercise from recreational to elite.

This module explores the working practices of high performance coaching environments. Specifically, this module focuses upon the use of theory to critically analyse practice.

This module will develop your understanding of the application of exercise and physical activity in clinical settings, including physical and psychological states and conditions.
