All foundation year students study the academic skills for higher education module, which will help you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree-level work. This academic skills for higher education module is shared with other Foundation degrees courses in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will also study modules focused on numeracy and data analysis, with topics including probability, statistics and data analysis.
International and EU students whose first language is not English and who have an IELTS score of less than 5.5 will study an English language module.
Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees automatic progression onto Year 1 of the degree you have chosen to study. Details of the course content of each degree can be found by selecting the relevant course in the A to Z list of courses.

UK and Channel Islands full-time foundation year fee: £9,535 for the 2025/26 academic year (subject to Parliamentary approval). On progression to any linked degree course, the standard UK and Channel Islands tuition fee would apply. For 2025/26, this is £9,535 (subject to Parliamentary approval). Fees for subsequent academic years may increase for inflation to reflect increased costs of course delivery (up to a maximum of 10% per academic year) and/or changes in UK government regulation. Inflationary increases will be calculated by reference to RPIx (RPIx is a measure of inflation in the UK). Fee increases are subject to limits imposed by UK government regulation.
EU and Non-EU international full-time foundation year fee: £21,500 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)
A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. For courses that offer a placement year option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,907 (subject to Parliamentary approval). For courses that offer a study year abroad option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,430 (subject to Parliamentary approval). Placement Year fees and study abroad fees for subsequent academic years may increase for inflation to reflect increased costs of course delivery (up to a maximum of 10% each academic year) and/or changes in UK government regulation. Students often choose to buy a laptop in their first year; however, there are PCs on campus and students can borrow laptops which are suitable for use on these courses. There are no other costs in the foundation year. Beyond this point, the students will embark on separate courses that may have their own cost associations, which cannot be included as part of foundation year costing.

Money MattersAfter successful completion of the foundation year in sport and exercise sciences, you can progress on to the relevant BSc (Hons) degree.
Our degrees open up a range of career paths in elite sports, community development, teaching, health and rehabilitation. You might want to work as a sports scientist with professional athletes and clubs or take a role in a hospital or medical centre specialising in health, fitness and rehabilitation. Or maybe you’d like to work in personal training or manage coaching programmes or sporting initiatives. Some of our graduates choose to go into teaching after studying for a PGCE, while others opt to carry on their studies with a masters or PhD. Whatever your career ambitions, our sport degrees will help offer you a path to success.
