Learning is all around us. Education’s impact doesn’t end in the classroom, from the way our minds develop to the way our society functions, it’s an area that’s alive with various paths and possibilities.
How is childhood portrayed in the media? Why are there such different views of education and how are they formed?
Throughout our education foundation year, you’ll consider these and other questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Drawing on sociological and psychological theories and ideas, you’ll explore your own personal experiences of childhood and education.
We want to make your experience as interactive and collaborative as possible. The foundation year is designed to introduce you to a range of current debates and contemporary issues in education.

After completing the foundation year Emily is currently undertaking the BA (Hons) Early Years and Childhood Studies degree.
On the course you’ll learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, group projects, presentations and discussions. The foundation year allows you to build confidence in your skills and knowledge.
Throughout your foundation year you will have your own dedicated personal tutor to support your development and guidance when electing your BA (Hons) course.

UK and Channel Islands full-time foundation year fee: £9,250 per year for the foundation year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.
EU and Non-EU international full-time foundation year fee: £20,000 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)
A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Within the unit Manchester Met. Foundation Project students may work with external partners. This may incur travel costs which would be estimate: £2 to £15 a day.
It is estimated that the maximum costs for placement travel would be £200 in an academic year. Estimated costs are based on travel prices in Greater Manchester in February 2022. Travel costs are subject to change as a result of travel price increases.
The cost of travel to a placement setting is covered by the student. Travel costs to placement will vary considerably depending on where you live, the location of your placement and how you choose to travel. DBS checks - before starting on your course, you must undergo a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check (Enhanced Disclosure). The University covers the cost of payment for the DBS application and ID verification for new students where the DBS check is a requirement of the course, and where the application is made through the University, using the University’s approved service provider, currently First Advantage Disclosures.
Responsibility for DBS clearance on employment-based and CPD programmes normally lies with the employer, not the University. Where a DBS check is required for placement but not supported by your employer, the University will cover the cost of the first check when completed through the University, using the University’s approved provider, currently First Advantage Disclosures, as above.
Upon completion of the DBS check on whichever course, students have the option to subscribe to the DBS Update Service. The Update Service allows individuals to keep their DBS certificates up-to-date, and allows employers or education providers to check a current certificate, without the need to request a new certificate. At April 2022, the cost of subscription to the DBS Update Service is £13.00 per year, to be paid by the student. Subscription is strongly encouraged for students embarking on programmes, where DBS clearance will be an ongoing requirement for placements and professional practice.
Students who have resided outside the UK continuously for a period of twelve months or more in the last ten years, while over the age of 18, will also be required to provide evidence of a satisfactory overseas police check, and to meet any associated costs, including the cost of a certified translation if required.
Returning students who have previously obtained DBS clearance but who require a new check, for example, due to a suspension of study, are required to pay the DBS application fee of £38.00 (accurate at 6th April 2022) and any associated costs, including the cost of ID verification through the Post Office Certification Service, which is approximately £13.00 but subject to the relevant cost at the time of application.
You may also need to budget for student membership of professional bodies.

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop and up to £100 each year for books and printing.

Money MattersUpon successful completion of your foundation year, you are able to progress onto either BA (Hons) Education or BA (Hons) Early Years and Childhood degrees.
As a graduate, you could develop your career across the education sector. You might work in community and youth work, or museum and gallery education. You could also pursue a career in related areas such as education publishing or the local government. Or perhaps you’ll continue on to postgraduate study.
If you decide you’d like to become a teacher, you’ll need to complete a PGCE* or another training route (this is normally a one-year course).
*Whilst this degree course does not provide qualified teacher status, it can provide a good foundation to progress to a PGCE at a later stage. Those considering undertaking a PGCE should be aware of the specific requirements for this.
