This course blends theoretical and practical-based modules that critically evaluate the key theories and current issues in sport coaching and development. Study with us and you will be taken on a journey that will challenge your perceptions, ideas and understanding of coaching and sport development on our student-focused programme.
You will gain a clear understanding of the sport sector, explore current issues that impact on sport, evaluate sporting policies and develop an awareness of sport-based intervention, whilst also enhancing your skills and knowledge as coaches and educators. Based in Manchester and with a range of teaching environments on offer – traditional classroom-based activities, practical sessions and work-based learning options – this course can offer something for everyone. With highly qualified, research-active staff leading the course, our BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching and Development degree provides you with the most up-to-date practice, expertise and discussions within the sector, to lay the foundations for your future career success.
The assessment range for this degree reflects the nature of the skills required to work in sport coaching and development. Assessments may include group work, presentations, class-based tests, coaching delivery and written work (including essays, reports and research articles).

UK and Channel Islands full-time foundation year fee: £9,535 for the 2025/26 academic year (subject to Parliamentary approval). EU and Non-EU international full-time foundation year fee: £21,500 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)

Part-time fee: £5375 per 30 credits studied. The fee per credit will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (eg no repeat years or breaks in study). The total amount you pay each year may differ based on the number of credits studied.
A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. For courses that offer a placement year option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,907 (subject to Parliamentary approval). For courses that offer a study year abroad option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,430 (subject to Parliamentary approval). Placement Year fees and study abroad fees for subsequent academic years may increase for inflation to reflect increased costs of course delivery (up to a maximum of 10% each academic year) and/or changes in UK government regulation. Inflationary increases will be calculated by reference to RPIx (RPIx is a measure of inflation in the UK). Fee increases are subject to limits imposed by UK government regulation.
Part-time students may take a maximum of 90 credits each academic year.
All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC laboratories and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop and up to £200 each year for books and printing.
Placement costs for 2025 entry are to be confirmed. In 2022, the tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option was £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing student’s progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for a placement year abroad for those courses that offer this option was £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
In addition to the student fees, students are expected to cover additional costs as part of their programme of study.
Travel: Students will be required to travel between specialist facilities, such as our All Saints and Platt Lane sites. An annual bus pass for travel around Manchester costs approximately £240 (indicative).
Kit: Students are required to contribute a one-off payment for kit of £50 at the point of course entry. Any replacement kit required over the period of study will be supplied and paid for by the Department. This kit should be worn at all practical and lab sessions.

Money MattersCoaching and sport development careers exist within academic institutions such as schools and colleges, as well as in community sports clubs, local authorities and within sports businesses. There are also opportunities within health and fitness providers such as gyms, leisure centres and local-government owned sports departments. You’d also be well placed to pursue a career working with national governing bodies of sport, commercial companies and professional sports clubs, both nationally and internationally.
A degree in sport coaching and development will also equip you with a range of transferable skills, such as the ability to develop meaningful relationships, solve complex problems and become an effective communicator, which are highly valued in any career.
Graduates from this course could find employment in a variety of areas, such as international sport coaching, managing coaching programmes or sporting initiatives and campaigns, performance analysis, personal training, teaching or even finding success as an entrepreneur after starting their own sports and leisure companies. Many students will progress to masters level study.
