Part of the medical team helping a mother to regain movement after a stroke. Getting an athlete back on the pitch after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. Easing a 4 year's old long-term breathing problems, caused by cystic fibrosis.
All of these scenarios have one thing in common; a physiotherapist.
Amongst a team of skilled healthcare professionals – including doctors and nurses – physiotherapists independently identify, assess and analyse physical problems caused by injury, illness or ageing and treat them by taking a holistic approach using skills such as manual therapy, exercise or therapeutic handling.

3 years full-time
Our aim is to help you become a confident and independent physiotherapist. We want you to make informed decisions about the best way to care for your patients.
You’ll be based in our contemporary Brooks building, with access to our real-world clinical equipment and facilities. Day to day, you’ll be taught using a variety of methods, including lectures, tutorials, group work and practical classes. You'll practice your skills and techniques during simulated patient scenarios in our physiotherapy practice rooms. We have seven dedicated practice rooms which are available for you to book out, giving you a safe space to develop your expertise in a supportive environment.
It takes practical as well as academic training to gain the skills you need to become a physiotherapist. And nothing beats hands-on experience in a practice setting – that’s why you’ll spend one-third of this course on placements, completing them in each year of study.

We often link up with external professionals too, helping to enhance your learning and build valuable connections to the working world.
These typical entry requirements may be subject to change for the 2025/26 academic year. Please check back for further details.
Full-time fee: £9,535 for the 2025/26 academic year (subject to Parliamentary approval). Fees for subsequent academic years may increase for inflation to reflect increased costs of course delivery (up to a maximum of 10% per academic year) and/or changes in UK government regulation. Inflationary increases will be calculated by reference to RPIx (RPIx is a measure of inflation in the UK). Fee increases are subject to limits imposed by UK government regulation.
Full-time fee: £21,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. For courses that offer a placement year option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,907 (subject to Parliamentary approval). For courses that offer a study year abroad option that starts in September 2025, the tuition fee is £1,430 (subject to Parliamentary approval). Placement Year fees and study abroad fees for subsequent academic years may increase for inflation to reflect increased costs of course delivery (up to a maximum of 10% each academic year) and/or changes in UK government regulation. Compulsory estimate: £0 to £100 depending on whether you already have suitable footwear and clothing for practice and skills sessions, and how much you want to spend.
Optional estimate: Replacement or non-standard uniforms: £15 to £50
Uniforms: Full uniform is provided free of charge when the course commences.
If you wish to replace any item of uniform or secure additional items of uniform throughout the course (eg because it has been damaged or no longer fits) then they must order and pay for this directly with the supplier. There are certain exceptions to this, for example if the student becomes pregnant. These are detailed in the faculty uniform policy. You can choose to purchase non-standard items such as fleeces directly from the supplier.
You will need to purchase suitable footwear for practice. NHS Trusts require shoes (not trainers) that meet health and safety requirements. Advice will be given on what to purchase. There is a loose dress code for practical skills sessions (trainers, t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms) which should be purchased at minimal cost (eg there is no need for designer brand trainers).
We strongly recommend that you purchase a number of items at the start of term which you will find useful on the course (eg a stethoscope, tape measure, scissors and goniometer) but it is not mandatory. These can be purchased at the book fair in Freshers Week at reasonable prices (£20 - £30 in total).
Optional estimate: £2 to £12 a day whilst on placement (costs will vary considerably)
You will need to budget for travel costs to your placement which could be up to 80 kilometres from the University. Travel costs to placement will vary considerably depending on where you live, the location of your placement and how you choose to travel. Information on public transport costs within Greater Manchester can be found at www.tfgm.com.
All NHS Trusts charge for car parking.
Compulsory estimate: £0.00 to £51.00 depending on your status
DBS checks - Before starting on your course, you must undergo a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check (Enhanced Disclosure). The University covers the cost of payment for the DBS application and ID verification for new students where the DBS check is a requirement of the course, and where the application is made through the University, using the University’s approved service provider, currently First Advantage Disclosures.
Responsibility for DBS clearance on employment-based and CPD programmes normally lies with the employer, not the University. Where a DBS check is required for placement but not supported by your employer, the University will cover the cost of the first check when completed through the University, using the University’s approved provider, currently First Advantage Disclosures, as above.
Upon completion of the DBS check on whichever course, students have the option to subscribe to the DBS Update Service. The Update Service allows individuals to keep their DBS certificates up to date, and allows employers or education providers to check a current certificate, without the need to request a new certificate. At April 2022, the cost of subscription to the DBS Update Service is £13.00 per year, to be paid by the student. Subscription is strongly encouraged for students embarking on programmes, where DBS clearance will be an ongoing requirement for placements and professional practice.
Students who have resided outside the UK continuously for a period of twelve months or more in the last ten years, while over the age of 18, will also be required to provide evidence of a satisfactory overseas police check, and to meet any associated costs, including the cost of a certified translation if required.
Returning students who have previously obtained DBS clearance but who require a new check, for example, due to a suspension of study, are required to pay the DBS application fee of £38.00 (accurate at 6th April 2022) and any associated costs, including the cost of ID verification through the Post Office Certification Service, which is approximately £13.00 but subject to the relevant cost at the time of application.
You may also need to budget for student membership of professional bodies.
Optional estimate: £400
All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop and up to £100 each year for books and printing.
The course uses Moodle and each unit of study has a dedicated area. The programme team post resources/links to resources on Moodle and you are at liberty to print the resources in hard copy should you wish to. If printing is done using the university print services, the costs of a single sheet (black and white) is 5p (at the time of going to press).
The course allows you to arrange your final placement (Placement 3) overseas if you wish. Costs associated with overseas study are variable but will include flights and other miscellaneous travel, insurance (travel and, in some cases, additional clinical liability insurance) and subsistence (food, shelter). There are companies (such as Work the World OR Projects Abroad), who undertake to arrange physiotherapy placements overseas.
Costs incurred during Placement 3 are not supported by Manchester Met and you must meet all costs. There will be many opportunities for extra-curricular activity (including community engagement) and travel to and from venues/parking at venues will be funded by you. Other qualifications (sports massage, sports taping, pitchside first aid) are periodically available but are optional, not mandatory. If you wish to gain these additional qualifications, there will be additional cost.

Money MattersGraduates from our course usually begin their physiotherapy careers by working as band 5 physiotherapists, on rotation positions in NHS hospitals. Some of our recent graduates are working for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust and for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.
However, as a chartered physiotherapist, you could work in the NHS or the private sector. The organisations you might work at include hospitals, sports clubs, in the community and care homes, and schools.
You may also decide to refine your skills and specialise in a particular area, such as musculoskeletal, neurological or cardiorespiratory, or focus on women’s health or mental health. We offer several postgraduate qualifications, such as our MSc Advanced Physiotherapy course.
