This one year top-up programme offers direct entry into the final year of a Bachelors degree to students who have successfully completed a relevant HND (or equivalent), or who have completed the second year of relevant undergraduate degree, who wish to use their current qualifications to develop skills in international fashion practices.

Our BA (Hons) International Fashion Design programme explores both design innovation and the technical aspects of fashion manufacturing. Graduates are employed for their creativity, professionalism, and ability to develop innovative ranges using both manual and digital technologies. The fashion industry is constantly changing, businesses are moving to more sustainable and environmental practices and are seeking to become more inclusive of the diverse communities they serve. As part of your course, you will be investigating the rapid shifts in the way fashion is designed, manufactured, and retailed.
You will be encouraged to express your individual identity as a creative and technical practitioner, developing a portfolio that specialises in areas appropriate to your career aspirations such as luxury, tailoring, creative cut, outerwear, denim, lifestyle, or performance fashion products. The practical aspects of the course are underpinned by the study of the cultural contexts of fashion, considering sustainability and contemporary society in relation to the future of the fashion industry.
You will be assessed on your ability to innovate through design, using contemporary and emerging manufacturing technologies and industry standard specifications to produce fashion ranges and products. You will produce a professional design portfolio, detailed technical specifications, full graded patterns, and a capsule range.

Full-time fee: £9,250 per year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.
Full-time fee: £21,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Workshop and Materials:
All students on a design programme can expect to purchase art materials, sketchbooks, paper, fabric, and other materials to undertake and complete assignments. Students will be supported by practical machine and digital workshops, that will provide the students with the facilities and tools necessary for making and sampling. Students will not be charged for general use workshop facilities, however the use of more specialised processes such as laser cutting and digital printing will incur additional costs.
Materials used when developing individual projects will be paid for by the student, many resources are available for purchase, at cost from Manchester Fashion Institute Resource centre. Workshop and material costs are therefore variable and dependent on personal making practices, materials and processes used within individual practice, however an indicative average range across the top-up programmes would be: £200 to £500 (primarily cut and make projects).
IT and Digital:
Whilst software and access to PCs and Macs are provided on campus, it is recommended that students own a laptop for collating and developing written and visual research, for producing written submissions and presentations, and to facilitate flexible independent working. Subject specific software is also required.

The university offers Adobe Creative Cloud as part of the on campus standard platform, however it is recommended that students purchase the student version of Adobe Creative Cloud to enhance their skills/practice during independent study.
Research and Study visits:
There may be travel costs involved in pursuing personal lines of research, and students are encouraged to visit professional events to inform their personal practice. These might be local/national, such as London Fashion Week. As such, costs will be optional, and dependent on the level and scope of each student’s research activity.

Print Costs: Student submissions are often digital but there will be occasions when print is more suitable, however this can be done cost effectively by using Manchester Fashion Institute facilities and Manchester Metropolitan University Print Services.

Money MattersThe unique mix of specialist pathways that this programme offers will enable successful graduates to locate their own practice and ambitions firmly within international industry and social contexts. The course encompasses cultural and business awareness and offers students the opportunity to promote their work through showcases and simulated real-world scenarios such as mock interviews or pitches. Students exiting with a strong portfolio of work will have the opportunity to progress directly into postgraduate level or secure employment.
As the programme offers a broad content, the job roles graduates can enter are broader than many competitor courses. Students who successfully complete the Design Practice pathway will go on to work as skilled fashion professionals in roles such as designers, product developers, pattern cutters and garment technologists.
Graduates will have the confidence to adapt in the fast-changing environment of the fashion industry and will have the literacy and understanding of contemporary and emerging technologies that will set them apart from other fashion graduates.
