Our department is home to a wealth of expertise, with leading researchers working across diverse approaches to the past, focusing on social, cultural, political and military topics and contemporary heritage practice. In the field of public history, we encourage students to work with both their tutors and the wider community in producing original research projects with 'real world' impact. We offer an impressive sweep of time and place, including ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, the medieval world, the Tudors, the Americas, China and India, global conflict and revolution in the modern era. With this wealth of expertise behind us, we can ensure your learning is not only relevant, but cutting edge.
Our programme is flexible and allows you to develop your own specialisms as a historian. You will have the chance to choose modules covering a variety of different periods, spanning the ancient to the modern world, and a wide geographical range, including Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. If your interests develop strongly in one area, you may choose to graduate with a degree title that reflects this: Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern, or American.
BA History: For students whose intellectual curiosity spans centuries and continents, our BA History programme offers an exciting range of options, encompassing over five millennia of human experience. Study the birth of democracy in the agora of ancient Athens, understand the explosive growth of Manchester, the 'Shock City' of the industrial revolution, consider lives lived in the shadow of Cold War nuclear Armageddon, and learn about the hidden history of black communities in Tudor England. Through this degree, you will master a wealth of knowledge, demonstrating your command of detail, ability to gather, organise and deploy information, and, in constructing logical and evidence-based arguments, your intellectual integrity and maturity. Watch a short video about what you could study on our BA History degree here.
BA History (Ancient): Our ancient historians offer expertise in ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian history. Studying with them will introduce you to over 3,000 years of history and archaeology and enable you to explore the lives of ancient peoples, from the hearths of family homes, to the streets of bustling, fractious cities and the borders of far-flung empires. Yet, knowledge of these pasts is not set in stone, and through examining current debates and new discoveries in the field you will critically engage with, and challenge, what we think we know about these formative periods of world history. Watch a short video about this specialism here.
BA History (Medieval and Early Modern): Dynamic change marked these fascinating eras; we offer modules that challenge conventional wisdom and offer fresh approaches to these seminal centuries. Walk in the footsteps of pilgrims, journey to Outremer (the Crusader states), join the intrigue at the Tudor court, enjoy the splendour of Versailles or ponder the coming apocalypse! The debates among historians and the nature of the primary sources for these periods offer stimulating challenges, honing your analytical ability, and your capacity to consider and solve problems. Watch a short video about this specialism here.
BA History (American): The twentieth century was ‘the American century’, but what fate does this century hold for the United States? Understanding the challenges, foreign and domestic, that face Americans today requires that we understand America’s turbulent past. Our Americanists offer courses that span the colonial period to the twentieth century, considering the ordeal of racial slavery, the experience of women, the challenges of war, the Great Depression and relations with the wider world. Addressing this contested history effectively will bring to your work: structure, coherence, clarity and fluency of expression. Watch a short video about this specialism here.

Money MattersThe skills of the historian are in high demand in today’s workplaces, where knowledgeable, adaptable, and analytical thinkers, with a sophisticated understanding of what moves and motivates people, are highly valued. During your time with us, you’ll develop an international mindset as well as a rich set of analytical, digital, and communication skills that make you career-ready and strongly equipped to deal with the challenges of professional life.
Our graduates have forged rewarding careers in business, retail and public services, in education, finance, and in the cultural and heritage sectors. Many move straight into careers upon graduation but a high proportion choose to advance their studies at post-graduate level, either in history or a related discipline, such as heritage management, or building further on their skills in management, business studies, law or digital media.
Our staff work with a range of local and national organisations, while our specialist centre – the Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage – ensures that our history is studied and celebrated in the community, through museums, schools and events like the Manchester History Festival. These connections allow us to offer our enterprising and ambitious students the chance to apply their knowledge and skills to 'real world' problems, while they study.
There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study MA History/MA Public History and Heritage at postgraduate level, giving you the opportunity to focus further on the area of history that you feel most passionate about.
