With climate change and environmental damage at record levels, there’s never been a greater need for conservation biologists. This masters will give you the vital skills to play your part in one of the key issues of our times.
The world’s habitats are undergoing rapid transformation. The impacts of climate change are causing species extinction at an unprecedented rate. Conservation biology as a discipline looks at the science behind these changes – including the identification of ecosystems at risk, ways of conserving biodiversity, and the role of genetics and demography.
With our masters, you’ll tackle all that and more, gaining the knowledge and skills for a career at the forefront of conservation. You’ll explore the scientific background of species conservation and the factors driving extinction. You’ll also look at the sustainable use of resources and learn valuable statistical techniques for analysing ecological data.
But this course is as much about pra...
1 year full-time
Our MSc Global Conservation Biology course aims to provide you with an advanced understanding of the science which underpins conservation.
The programme has a strong numerical and research-orientated approach. There are core modules in Statistics and Research Design, Practical Techniques and Analysis in Conservation Biology, Bird Evolution, Behaviour and Conservation and Species Conservation and Recovery.
You’ll have the opportunity to go on a residential field trip overseas. This could take you across Europe, Turkey or even Tanzania in East Africa. You’ll usually have a choice between two destinations – additional fees will apply if you decide to choose to go on the East African trip.
The course has a global outlook and is taught by a large community of research active staff. Your learning is enhanced by being able to spend time in countries where wild and managed animal and plant populations can be studied first-hand. Thanks to exciting opportunities to complete MSc research projects in countries such as Greece, Tanzania and Kenya, you'll be able to gain real-world experience and see how conservation theory translates into practice. We also have strong links with many UK based conservation organisations which also offer research opportunities.
Whether you've already made your decision about what you want to study, or you're just considering whether postgraduate study is right for you, there are lots of ways you can meet us and find out more about postgraduate student life at Manchester Met.
