On our masters in computer science, you’ll study core modules covering a range of topics including programming fundamentals and cloud enterprise and development. You’ll also complete an independent, in-depth research project, supported by our academic team.
You can choose to study the course full-time over one-year, or part-time, where you’ll complete the modules over two years. You may also choose to take an additional one-year optional industry placement on the full-time route.
Developing your knowledge of information systems and databases in relation to business needs, we’ll get you industry ready. You’ll get to grips with programming fundamentals, as well as object-oriented programming principles to learn to create software applied to a range of industrially inspired problems. By covering a range of topics in computer networks, from principles to architectures, you’ll gain a broad understanding of modern large-scale networked systems, preparing you for a varied and exciting career.
Through the cloud enterprise and development module, you’ll gain hands-on experience with cloud software and insights into how modern scalable applications are developed and deployed to the cloud.
Finally, you'll complete an in-depth, independent research project. With the support of our academic and technical team, you’ll undertake a piece of research on a topic of your choice related to your studies. This will involve designing, implementing and evaluating a substantial piece of software and documenting the research through writing a dissertation.

This course is open to anyone with a UK honours degree – at least a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, whatever the subject. We might also consider your application if you have a lower-level qualification, together with substantial professional experience.

A masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Optional estimate: £1,850
Following the completion of the academic credits for your MSc award, this course is available with an optional one-year placement in your second year. The industry placement allows you to gain additional practice credits by working in an industry setting, relevant to your studies.
Students who do a placement year will be required to pay a placement fee of £1,850.

Students can choose to join the BCS at any point in their study. It is not required but is useful. The charge is £20 for one year and £30 for four years. More information can be found on the membership page of their website.

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 for books and printing.
The advanced skills and understanding you’ll develop on our MSc Computer Science course can open doors to roles across a range of industries, in both the public and private sectors.
