Course information

On the Manchester Met MBA, you’ll have an immersive learning experience. You’ll learn using real case studies and organisational situations and will hear from industry leaders in both the public and private sectors.

Alongside leading academics from Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School, each module will feature guest lectures and/or industry speakers from the UK and overseas. The course will also be supported by non-credit bearing masterclasses which will inform your understanding of various contemporary issues.

Over two years, you will study eight 15 credit modules and complete two 30 credit projects that are research enhanced and co-created with industry experts to give you the tools to take your career to the next level. Each year, you will study four modules and complete one project.

Designed to fit around your existing work commitments, you can choose to study up to four 15 credit modules virtually across the two years. Our hybrid learning technologies mean classes will consist of a mixture of face-to-face and virtual students working and learning together in real time.

Both years will culminate in an on-campus project showcase and masterclass series.  Along with the in-person residential at the beginning of the course, these are carefully designed to ensure you have opportunities to forge connections and a lifelong network with your cohort. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a study abroad trip, which will be a fantastic opportunity to build connections and increase your understanding of global business contexts.

This course is a masters qualification and consists of 180 credits.

In Year 1 you will complete four 15 credit units and one 30 credit project.

Core modules

Dynamic Strategies for a Changing World (15 Credits)

In this module you will explore the principles of formulating a responsible strategy during volatile and uncertain times. You will learn to manage complex strategic problems using design thinking, experiential strategies and decision-making theories. You will also be provided with the analytical tools to consider how to lead and manage organisational change in the twenty-first century.

Strategic Marketing Futures (15 credits)

We operate in an era of significant macro-environmental change. This has led to rapid developments in marketing approaches and techniques. In this module you will be provided with an overview of the challenges and opportunities in developing an effective marketing strategy in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times.

Developing Leadership for Decent Employment and Productivity (15 credits)

In this module you will explore current and influential theories across leadership, human resource management and organisational behaviour. This will help you to build an understanding of the history and emergence of the decent work and good employment agenda and reconsider your approach to people management.

Corporate Financial Management (15 credits)

One of the core concerns for executives in the business world is being able to finance the organisation and to make intelligent accounting decisions. This module will introduce and evaluate fundamental accounting techniques that are deployed by finance teams. You will explore traditional concepts such as budgeting and control mechanisms alongside measurement tools such as return on investment. You will also discover the accounting mechanisms used to quantify the impact of incorporating sustainability into your financial decision making.

Transformational Applied Entrepreneurship (30 credits)

This is an experiential module where you will learn about the latest research in entrepreneurship, apply principles around enterprise behaviours, attributes and competencies and consider grand challenges. You will use the entrepreneurial development cycle to generate ideas and propose solutions in light of the local and global challenges that impact people, communities and planet.

Study and assessment breakdown

Ten credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

Core modules

Operations Management (15 credits)

This module will explore world-class operations management. You will cover top level management issues, such as developing a focused operational strategy that supports a company’s business and marketing objectives. You will also develop an understanding and practice of key operational techniques to be able to deliver a strategy.

Leadership in Sustainable Finance and Accounting (15 credits)

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to critically engage with financial and economic information in order to make bold decisions that are underpinned by a strong evidence base. In this module you will discuss the fundamental economic principals and we will also explore how senior leaders can raise capital and use investment appraisal tools to make grand decisions about future directions. You will also consider how corporate leaders can leverage technology and sustainable finance principles, among others, to build a competitive advantage and we will explore the ethical considerations involved in doing so.

Global Economic Change and Business: Shifting Paradigms (15 credits)

In the age of globalisation, the changing patterns of global economic power are referred to as global shift. The forces that underpin this shift in power include economic growth, trade, international investment, demographics, technological change, institutional governance, global macroeconomic linkages and geopolitics. In this module you will be equipped with the analytical knowledge and skills to evaluate the impact of these forces from a theoretical and applied perspective.

Business Analytics and Decision Support (15 credits)

Insights from business analytics enable organisations to inform their operational and strategic decisions with a knowledge of market trends. This module will give you an understanding of the application of business analytics within the contemporary business environment. This will include the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of business analytics for the primary purpose of supporting organisational decision-making.

Consultancy in Action (30 credits)

In this module you will complete a group consultancy project to scope, refine and meet the brief of a live client. Within your group you will be encouraged to provide an innovative solution for an organisation. Your project may be for a commercial or non-profit organisation. It is expected that you will collaborate with the client and apply a range of consultancy and research methods in order to identify the specifics of the problem, conduct research and present your solution.

Entry requirements

This course is open to applications from students in the UK and internationally who have leadership and management experience and are ready to take their career to the next level. To be considered you’ll need:

A UK honours degree – 2:2 or above – or the international equivalent PLUS a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience at managerial level OR significant management experience (10 years or more) and a record of achievement in business and leadership.
If your first language is not English, you'll be required to produce evidence of English language proficiency. For this course, we require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted qualifications can be viewed here.
All MBA applicants must submit a personal statement and up-to-date CV. We'll interview all applicants who meet the course entry requirements to provide you with the opportunity to tell us why you think the course is right for you, and how your work and other experiences will help you to succeed on the MBA.
To support non-standard entry applications (such as an applicant who has an undergraduate degree below a 2:2 or an applicant who does not have an undergraduate degree at all), prior to interview, you’ll be asked to undertake a short assignment related to your management experience, reflecting on your learning, and linking to your aspiration for studying an MBA.

Fees and funding

UK and Channel Island Students

Part-time fee: £24,000 (£12,000 per year). Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

EU and Non-EU International Students

Part-time fee: £28,000 (£14,000 per year). Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Equipment

We encourage students to have or buy a laptop at onset of the course, to facilitate the best possible learning environment.

The approximate cost of this could be between £250 - £500. Should you be unable to purchase a laptop, or use an existing one, we have on-site PC labs and the option to borrow laptops from the library.

Our core textbooks are all accessible as e-books via the library. As such, there is no requirement that you purchase your own copies. You may still choose to buy these at an approximate cost of up to £500 for the entire course.

Field Trip

Estimated travel cost dependent on the destination country and time of study abroad trip. Approximately £800.

Travel

You are advised to consider the cost of return travel to Manchester for required campus attendance. The cost of this will depend on your home location and the distance to and from Manchester.

1. Organise your supporting documents

You’ll need to provide information about your experience and in some cases supporting documents. You might need to request some of these from your previous institution/s, so you should factor in the additional time needed for this.

Before you start your application, you should prepare:

Academic certificates and transcripts for any relevant qualifications
Employment reference
Your up-to-date CV
Your personal statement
Your Manchester Met ID, if you’re a current or former student
If you’re an international student, we’ll also need evidence of your English language proficiency

2. Write your personal statement

You’ll need to write a personal statement explaining why you want to do the course. We’ll use it to help us decide whether to offer you a place.
It should be 450-500 words (4,000 characters), setting out why the course is right for you, your career aspirations, and provide an outline of your professional and managerial experience. It’s a good idea to write your personal statement in advance, and then paste it into the online application form.

3. Submit your application

Follow the link above, and your course details will be automatically entered into the application form.

4. What happens once you have submitted your application?

After you apply, you’ll receive an automated email, containing your Manchester Met ID number and instructions on how to access our application portal, where you can upload your supporting documents. We recommend saving this email for future reference.

5. Invitation to interview

Applicants who meet our entry requirements will be invited to an online interview.

6. What happens after interview?

If your application is successful, we’ll email you a formal offer. You can accept or decline the offer in the application portal. If your offer is conditional, you’ll need to provide evidence of meeting your offer conditions as soon as possible to secure your place.

We expect the admissions process to take no longer than six weeks.
