The taught element is equivalent to a postgraduate diploma and, as a professional qualification, enables progression to chartership in your first professional post.

The course is recognised and approved by CILIP (The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and the combination of taught modules, a dissertation and optional fieldwork will prepare you to take a leading role in the rapidly evolving knowledge and information industries, and enhance your skills for employability. Learning takes place in a vibrant environment and you will be able to take advantage of our excellent connections to the sector via fieldwork placements and a regular programme of visiting speakers.
The programme leader for this course is currently Dr Frances Johnson who has researched library and information science extensively and teaches on the course alongside staff who also bring many years of experience working in the library and information sector. We have published in peer reviewed publications and are active members of external professional groups such as CILIP's Information Literacy Group (ILG) and the eInformation Group (UKEIG).

You will normally have a second class honours degree or above (or international or professional equivalent) in any discipline.
Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.
Full-time fee: £10,250 per year (MA), £6,836 per year (PG Dip). Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Part-time fee: £1709 per 30 credits studied per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Full-time fee: £20,000 per year (MA), £13,336 per year (PG Dip). Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Part-time fee: £3334 per 30 credits studied per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
A masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
Optional estimate: £400
All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop and up to £100 for books and printing. Total optional cost: £400.
The increase in available digital information has led to a growing demand for professionals who have an understanding of information organisations.
As well as libraries, this includes the health sector, industries of cultural heritage, research, publishing, broadcast and media, and those employed to develop methods for storing, curating, accessing and using information in innovative ways. You will be ideally placed to pursue a career as an information professional.
