Explore the design, functioning and future of urban situations as you address the main challenges facing the sector today.
A taught postgraduate course that conducts research into how global cultural and economic forces influence contemporary cities. The design, functioning and future of urban situations is explored in written, drawn and modelled work that builds on the legacy of twentieth century urban theory and is directed towards the development of sustainable cities. The Master’s in Architecture and Urbanism engages academics and practitioners from different parts of the world with multi-disciplinary skills, including planners, landscape architects, historians, artists, environmental consultants, surveyors, and architects. Students join urban laboratories exploring specific research interests and addressing the main challenges of Architecture and Urbanism worldwide.
1 year full-time (48 weeks)
Through this course you will begin to engage directly with a chosen research subject area, gather data and formulate an original approach in your practice. You will synthesise your project culminating in the production of a leading-edge proposition until you present and contextualise your thesis. This internationally based course actively disseminates students' thesis work through conferences, exhibitions, competitions and publication.

We normally require at least an upper second class undergraduate UK honours degree (or international equivalent) in a related field, or proven experience in a relevant field.
Candidates are required to provide a portfolio and a written personal statement (approximately 450 words) as part of the application process.
Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.

A masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

All core books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 for books and printing. Total optional cost: £400.
Students are required to fund and organise their accommodation, travel and visas necessary for national and international fieldtrips associated with the programme (i.e. study trips associated with urban laboratories and where applicable research associated with their dissertation project). Students should budget for the cost of modelmaking material and other sundries required to communicate design progress and exhibit completed work.
Graduates have gone on to work with leading architectural, urbanism and town planning practices both nationally and internationally. An increasing number of graduates enrol on further research degrees at doctoral level.
