Develop key knowledge and core professional skills to enhance your employability in the legal sector. Combine SQE preparation with a modern and practical legal masters (LLM), an internationally recognised qualification.
Law, like any other sector, is subject to rapid change and development. Both the introduction of a new route to qualification (the SQE - Solicitors Qualifying Examination) and advancements in legal technology shape how we at Manchester Met prepare our students to become part of the legal workforce of the future.
The LLM Legal Practice allows you to develop key knowledge and professional skills to take the next step in your career, whether it be as a new graduate seeking qualification as a solicitor, or as a qualified lawyer pursuing opportunities for career development.

This course enables you to engage in postgraduate study of the law from perspectives that reflect the evolving legal landscape and the consequent expansion of new employment opportunities within the legal sector. It’s designed to meet the changing employment requirements of firms and aims to enhance your employment prospects in an expanding range of roles within legal and professional services.
You’ll start by studying Professionals in Practice, a module designed to develop your understanding of the professional context in which legal services are delivered. You will explore how business, digital and other skills are important to practising as a lawyer and will start to think about how you would like your career path to develop. You will also be introduced to legal technology and the changing legal services environment, both of which can act as a foundation for subsequent option modules and projects.
The SQE 1 preparatory module (Foundations and Applications of Legal Knowledge, 30-credits) is delivered online during your first semester. You will have access to a full suite of online resources to guide you through the material.
In your second semester you can complete the SQE 2 preparatory module (Legal Skills and Legal Practice, 30-credits). You can also select two additional option modules (15-credits) from the list below. This will give you the opportunity to study an area that is not tested in the SQE exams, but which will be important for you in terms of your future career.
During your final semester you will complete your two research projects. The first project (Inside Professional Practice) introduces you to key business skills for lawyers and focuses on a dimension of professional practice or legal service delivery, such as the changing ethical responsibilities of lawyers as a result of using legal technology. This is an opportunity for you to explore a practical industry based element of legal practice in an area in which you intend to work.
The second project (Law in Practice) enables you to showcase key academic research and critical writing skills in a subject area of your choice – this could be inspired by one of your chosen option modules, or your work in the professionals in practice module.
Both projects give you the opportunity to undertake self-directed work on topics of your own choosing, through which you can showcase employability skills desired by employers. They also give you the opportunity to focus on subjects at the cutting edge of law and legal practice.
During your studies you are also encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities such as mooting. You can also gain work experience through participation in the activities of our Pro Bono Network.
If you have any questions please contact the programme leader.
