Material and Process Innovation Collection
Contemporary craft and product design with a focus on new and innovative materials and technologies
Overview
This collection represents some of the most innovative uses of materials and processes in contemporary design from across the world.
Digital and emerging technologies are used to produce objects that could not otherwise be made, that use traditional practices in radical new ways, and that change how we think about and interact with everyday objects. It encompasses both new and established makers, from commercial to craft makers; from Patrick Jouin and Marcel Wanders to Glithero and Formafantasma.

The collection includes objects that investigate, and try to answer, current challenges brought about by environmental and other global issues. It includes examples of:
- bio-plastics and mycelium
- 3D printed garments
- conceptual jewellery
- open-source appliances
The latest additions to the collection include objects designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the first 3D printable, fashion NFT (non-fungible token).
This collection is not available to search online. You can make an appointment to view it in our Reading Room during opening hours. If you’d like to bring your students to see some of the collection, enquire about a group visit.
