My first job after graduating was working for a major oil and gas services company in Aberdeen who came to a graduate careers fair in my final year. Previously, I had not considered a career in that field. However, it seemed like a great opportunity with potential for a lot of adventure and travelling.

Outside of my studies, I took part in Engineers Without Borders Society, which contributed to an award granted to students who spent more than 35 hours on extracurricular activities. This reflected very well on my CV.

Engineering offers brilliantly varied career opportunities. You can have an incredibly technical and cutting-edge career path or you can manage and run large projects and companies.

It’s important to be resilient, keep motivated and make use of opportunities to enhance your personal development and professional skills. Be creative, motivated, committed and engaged.

I undertook an internship with Bosch Lawn and Garden during my degree. I also worked as a Student Ambassador, providing support during open and visit days as well as working with the International Team. These experiences helped me develop my communication and team working skills, along with my confidence.

As Engineers, we are constantly changing the world with inventions and solutions that affect everyone’s lives. We get to dream up all the coolest gadgets, then we get to go into the lab and actually make them. I’m still learning every day and enjoying every moment.

Engineering is one of the best career paths ever! It is worth all the effort. Think big! Those dreams are achievable if you don’t give up. Develop both technical and soft skills and consider going on an industrial placement as part of your degree. This will increase your chances of getting that dream job.

I have assisted with lectures and tutorials, helping to guide students in laboratories. I've also taken the opportunity to present my research to the general public through Outreach programmes.
