Taking place from 4 – 10 November, Chemistry Week highlights the importance of chemistry in today’s world. This year’s theme, ‘Chemistry is Shaping the Future’, emphasises the need to nurture the next generation of chemical scientists.

Our Laboratory Scientist Chemical Science Degree Apprenticeship is a key part of this mission, enabling employers to develop a skilled workforce ready to drive innovation and make a positive impact on the industry.

To mark the occasion, Manchester Met hosted its first Teachers and Careers Advisors Degree Apprenticeship Showcase on 7 November, in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The event was designed to equip teachers and careers advisors with the knowledge and tools to better advise their students on the opportunities available through degree apprenticeships, focusing on our Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Science and Bioscience.

Thirteen professionals from across Greater Manchester attended the event, representing schools and colleges that support over 10,000 students. Attendees were able to network while enjoying refreshments, learn about the comprehensive support provided to degree apprentices at Manchester Met, and hear first-hand insights from employers and apprentices.

The event wrapped up with a tour of our new Dalton Building, where apprentices have access to cutting-edge laboratories and equipment designed to support their hands-on learning.

Employer and apprentice panel insights

The morning featured two insightful panel discussions that offered valuable perspectives from both employers and apprentices. The employers invited to the panel shared more about various ways they can support apprentices in achieving qualifications and career progression in the workplace.

The apprentices’ panel featured our Laboratory Scientist (Chemical Science) degree apprentice alumni Sam Owens from Carbogen Amcis and Kasia Gierek from Italmatch, along with current degree apprentice Anmol Kuriem from Christeyns Professional Hygien. They discussed the realities of balancing work and study, the benefits of degree apprenticeships, and how to still experience university social life while working full-time.

Additionally, they emphasised the crucial role that teachers and careers advisors play in helping students explore and understand the different pathways available, especially when it comes to apprenticeships.

Receiving prestigious Awards

A major highlight of the event was the recognition of our Laboratory Scientist Chemical Science Degree Apprenticeship Team, who were awarded the 2023 Team Prize for Excellence in Higher Education Award by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

This award recognises the team’s dedication to delivering an innovative curriculum and providing high-quality teaching that yields outstanding outcomes for apprentices. Their commitment to supporting apprentices throughout their learning journey ensures that graduates are equipped to thrive in the chemical science field and drive innovation within the industry.

This recognition further reinforces the importance of degree apprenticeships in shaping the future though chemistry. Manchester Met is proud to be at the forefront of empowering educators and careers advisors to help the next generation of scientists realise their potential.
