Biography
Dr Rochelle Taylor is a Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence/Data Science in the Department of Computing and Mathematics at MMU. Before joining MMU, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 2013. and was a lecturer in Geology at Edge Hill University.
Her research areas are related to environmental and sustainable extraction and storage of subsurface resources that will aid the global energy transition and pathway to net zero. She is also interested in using her geophysical expertise to forecast anthropogenic impacts on air quality by analysing ground vibrations of road traffic.
Rochelle holds the following academic and teaching qualifications:
- PhD in Structural Geology and Geophysics, University of Manchester, UK.
- MSc (Distinction) in Data Science, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.
- MESci Degree (Honours) in Geology, University of Manchester, UK.
- Fellow of HEA, Advance HE, UK.
Projects
My research has a strong focus in applied AI, particularly in the environmental and geoscience domains. Some of my current research is outlined below:
- seismotrair - data-driven forecast of road traffic and air quality using seismology.
- HydroDetect ML - detection of subsurface natural hydrogen deposits using machine learning.
- XRF Analytics - data science analysis of XRF data from Greenland lake sediments.
Additionally, I have also undertaken projects in health and data ethics domains:
- CPET ML - a machine learning approach to predicting patient mortality from Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Tests (CPET) to assess patient eligibility for major abdominal surgery.
- Reviewing recent advances in biophysical modelling of skeletal muscle.
- PEAs in Pods - co-production of community-based public engagement for data and AI research.

Dr Rochelle Taylor is the Course Leader for the MSc Data Science and Module Leader for Principles of Data Science.
