Impact

Dr Ahmed has made a positive impact on both research and education at MMU. His research has added to our scientific knowledge and understanding of disease processes whereas his published textbooks have contributed immensely towards biomedical science education.

Research:

  • Dr Ahmed’s group have shown that glycation of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) alters its biological activity causing reduced angiogenesis of endothelial cells via a reduction in tyrosine phosphorylated proteins such as mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK)/early response kinase (ERK-1, ERK-2). Total binding of glycated FGF-2 to the cell surface tyrosine kinase receptor was also reduced. Such an effect in vivo may contribute to the delayed wound-healing seen in diabetes. Furthermore, his group reported for the first time that aminosalicylic acid preserved FGF-2 activity under glycating conditions being more effective than the established anti-glycation drug aminoguanidine.
  • Dr Ahmed’s group have also investigated the role of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) to understand why breast cancer rates increase in diabetes. Indeed, AGEs increased proliferation, migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells with this effect being partly regulated by matrix metalloproteinases and on the receptor for AGEs (RAGE) signal activation.
  • Dr Ahmed’s group showed for the first time that aged garlic extract is a potent anti-glycation agent as well as an established antioxidant with S-allyl cysteine being the key active ingredient. This was demonstrated both in vitro and in diabetic patients. His group have also identified novel sesterterpenes and stillbene glycosides that can inhibit angiogenesis and may have potential as anti-tumour agents.
  • Studies conducted by Dr Ahmed and colleagues in Karachi have identified novel oxindole derivatives as potent and safe anti-glycation compounds and this discovery has led to the filing of a US patent application in 2015 (Pub No: US 2015/0038543 A1).
  • Dr Ahmed’s group have investigated blood lead and manganese in childhood iron deficiency both in the UK and in Karachi, Pakistan. His findings have highlighted the need for urgent removal of environmental lead and manganese accompanied by therapeutic reduction of childhood iron deficiency anaemia in developing countries like Pakistan.

Education:

  • Three of Dr Ahmed’s books; Clinical Biochemistry, Biomedical Science Practice and Blood Science - Principles and Pathology are endorsed by the Institute of Biomedical Science and carry the IBMS logo.
  • The textbook Blood Science - Principles and Pathology is currently the only one meeting the requirements of the new discipline of Blood Science within the NHS following merger of some clinical biochemistry, haematology, blood transfusion and immunology departments.
  • All books meet the needs of degree students and biomedical science practitioners and feature highly on reading lists at many universities offering relevant programmes both in the UK and overseas.
