Dr Joseph Mallalieu

My profile

Biography

I use a combination of GIS, remote sensing and field techniques to study glacier and ice-sheet dynamics. My research investigates how glacier behaviour is influenced by a range of phenomena, particularly volcanism and ice-marginal lakes. I am currently a Research Fellow on the Leverhulme Trust Research Project: Using glaciers to identify, monitor, and predict volcanic activity, led by Dr Iestyn Barr.

Prior to joining MMU I completed a PhD at the University of Leeds concerning the lake-terminating dynamics of the Greenland Ice-Sheet, and worked as a Lecturer at York St John University.

Interests and expertise

I primarily use optical remote sensing and field techniques, including surveying and time-lapse photography, to quantify glacier dynamics over a range of timescales. I have a particular interest in how time-lapse photography can be integrated with Structure-from-Motion techniques to generate high spatio-temporal resolution records of glacial processes such as calving, and how advanced statistical analyses can be employed to enhance the understanding of complex controls on glacier dynamics.

In addition to the Leverhulme Research Project: Using glaciers to identify, monitor, and predict volcanic activity, I am also completing work on two INTERACT funded field projects: Cold Ice in a Warm Bath, and Glacier and Lake Response to Extreme Temperature Anomalies, both of which concern land- and lake-terminating glacier dynamics in Arctic Sweden.

Projects

I am currently a Research Fellow on the Leverhulme Trust Research Project: Using glaciers to identify, monitor, and predict volcanic activity, led by Dr Iestyn Barr (MMU).
