Tuition fees

How much you pay for tuition will depend on:

  • what you study
  • and your tuition fee status

Your tuition fees will normally stay the same for each year of your degree.

If your immigration status changes during your studies, you may be eligible for a tuition fee adjustment according to new regulations effective August 2024. For more details, please refer to the changes to tuition fee rules

If you take a break from your studies, your tuition fees may go up when you return.

Tuition fee status

We will assess your tuition fee status using information from your application form. And we will classify you as either:

  • UK and Channel Island Students
  • EU and Non-EU International Students

UK university fees for EU and non-EU international students will be different to the fees UK and Channel Island students will pay for the same course.

Although we consider all the information you provide, the two of the most important factors we look at are:

  • your nationality or where you have the right to live
  • and where you have been living for the last three years.

We make our decision using guidance from the UK Council for International Student Affairs.

On 23rd June 2020, the UK Government confirmed that EU, EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status or tuition fee loans/financial support for programmes starting in academic year 2021-22.

As a result of this, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals starting a programme from the academic year 2021-22 onwards will be charged fees at the international tuition fee rate.

This tuition fee change does not affect EU, EEA and Swiss nationals benefiting from UK citizens’ rights under the respective withdrawal agreements. It also does not apply to Irish nationals living in the UK or Ireland, whose right to study and to access benefits and services will remain under the Common Travel Area arrangement.

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals paying international tuition fees will be eligible for our international scholarships.

Important changes to the rules

Important changes to tuition fee rules

From August 2024, if you acquire ‘settled’ immigration status during your course, you might be able to switch from paying ‘overseas’ fees to paying ‘home’ fees from the next academic year of your current course (this might be Year 2, 3, 4 or later of your course). Any fee change would only apply from the year of eligibility and is not retrospective.

Please note that the rules around fee statuses are very complex, and this change is not the only requirement that must be met in order to qualify for fee re-assessment. Full details of the requirements are set out in UKCISA’s ‘Who pays ‘home’ fees for higher education in England?’ guide.

If you believe that you are eligible to qualify for a fee re-assessment, please first consult UKCISA’s guide to check all the relevant requirements for the category which applies to you. If you believe you meet all the relevant criteria, please complete the fee reassessment form so that our team can consider your case in good time ahead of the next academic year.
