About us
We are a large and active research centre, with a wide range of specialisms and research interests across English and Linguistics.
We offer postgraduate study at both masters and doctorate (PhD) level.
English
English research degrees
We offer PhD supervision in:

Renaissance writing

eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century literature

twentieth-century and contemporary fiction and biography

contemporary poetry and experimental writing

creative writing
We also offer PhD supervision in creative writing, including through professional practice for established writers or suitably qualified recent graduates.

Our English department runs masters courses in creative writing, English studies and publishing.

Linguistics
Linguistics research degrees
We offer PhD supervision in a wide range of linguistics subjects, including:
- the fundamentals of linguistics
- discourse analysis
- sociolinguistics
- forensic linguistics
- pragmatics
- multilingualism
- healthcare communication
- corpus linguistics
- language teaching (course design, language assessment, language acquisition)
- language in a globalised world
Our classic PhD programme lasts three years, with regular supervision and guidance.
You can choose to also take optional doctoral training, designed to build your research skills and abilities in applied linguistics through taught units.
Support to develop as a postgraduate researcher
Our research students benefit from access to the Postgraduate Arts and Humanities Centre (PHAC).
PHAC supports the development of new researchers and provides a foundation for the understanding of wider culture and society.
Our research culture and environment is shaped by our diverse community of PhD students, who organise a rolling programme of events and activities.
We also aim to provide teaching and research opportunities for our postgraduate researchers to help provide a rounded experience.
