What to expect from your personal tutor

As you join the Manchester Met community, you’ll meet a wide range of staff and students, but one of the most important relationships you’ll have at uni will be with your personal tutor.

Your personal tutor is an academic member of staff from your department or faculty. They’ll be your key contact throughout your academic journey, there to guide and support you and help you get the most out of your studies.

How can your personal tutor help?

The role of your personal tutor is to support your progress at uni, focusing on your academic, personal and future career development.  They can help you by:

  • Providing a single point of contact for support and guidance

  • Supporting you in the adjustment to university life

  • Discussing your academic progress and answering questions about your studies

  • Guiding you through your future career choices

  • Signposting you to support services when you need extra help.

Meeting your personal tutor

Your personal tutor will contact you to arrange a meeting within the first couple weeks of the academic year. You’ll then meet with them twice each semester, either in-person or via Microsoft Teams. You may meet them individually or as a group with other students.

They’ll keep in contact with you regularly, but you can get in touch at any point, you don’t need to wait until your next contact point if something is urgent or you need some advice.

You’ll be able to find the name of your personal tutor via the “Personal Tutor” tile on the MyMMU app after you’ve enrolled.

If you have any issues, contact the Student Engagement team at [email protected] or call 0161 247 6325.
