Carbon Literacy Reps are individuals equipped with an understanding of the causes of and solutions to climate change, and empowered to disseminate that knowledge throughout the organisations in which they work, thus playing a key role in driving the societal transformation urgently needed to address the climate crisis.

Step 1: Attend Carbon Literacy training

The first step for apprentices participating in this initiative is to attend Manchester Met’s Carbon Literacy Training, which is organised into two parts. Part 1 will help participants understand the science behind climate change and the scale of the challenge we face; part 2 will focus on what individuals, communities, and organisations can do to take meaningful action. The training will be highly interactive, with ample opportunity for discussion and sharing ideas. The training is delivered fully online and apprentices taking part can either attend the training over two half days or one full day:

Online Carbon Literacy training- delivered over two half days (please note that you need to attend both sessions):

o   Part 1: 15/2 (13:00-16:00)

o   Part 2: 22/2 (13:00-16:00)

Online Carbon Literacy training – delivered in one day:

o   29/2 (9:15-16:15)

Step 2: Attend the follow-on workshop: How can you bring climate education to your workplace?

The Carbon Literacy Training will be complemented by a subsequent workshop in which apprentices will work together to map out ways to tailor what they have learned to their own workplaces. This workshop is built on co-creation, where the Carbon Literacy team will support the apprentices in developing an educational resource that is relevant and useful for their organisation. The workshop consists of two main parts:

Part 1: apprentices will be able to explore what type of climate education initiative they would like to develop. This could be anything from a 10-minute presentation to a Carbon Literacy taster session or a full days’ worth of training.

Part 2: time for the apprentices to begin to develop this resource, with the option of incorporating materials from Manchester Met’s Carbon Literacy Toolkit. The Carbon Literacy team will help apprentices navigate the barriers and opportunities to implementing climate education in an organisational setting. This may include helping apprentices determine which delivery formats are practical in their workplace context, advising them on ways to adapt the existing Carbon Literacy materials, and equipping apprentices with the confidence to research and prepare their own industry-specific training materials and case studies, where relevant. Together we will also explore whether apprentices would like any additional support going forward.

Follow-on workshops may also be used as part of our ongoing research on the CL programme, in lieu of a focus group interview. For more information on our research please click here.

Apprentices taking part may pick one of the following dates to attend a follow-on workshop:

·      Follow on workshop: 13/3 (13:00-16:00)

·       Follow on workshop: 21/3 (10:00-13:00)

If you would like to attend, please send an email to QSApprenticeships@mmu.ac.uk and confirm your choice of initial and follow-up workshop dates.
