Taking place between Saturday 19 October 2024 and Saturday 9 November 2024, the Festival will explore the relationship between humans and digital technology.

This year audiences can find out how to make healthier food choices when buying online or whether social media is a friend or foe and many more. One of our events has been selected as part of the Festival’s ‘featured events’. Granny Jackson’s Dead is an immersive performance exploring technology, memory and mourning, which asks what’s good and what’s not-so-good about the ways that technology is changing our ritual lives.

Professor Nick Brook, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research said: “The Festival of Social Science plays a key role in connecting our research with new audiences. It is an excellent opportunity to discover some of the groundbreaking work our researchers are undertaking in the social sciences.

I hope you enjoy exploring more on how our research is engaging local communities, shaping policy and making an impact in the wider world.”

An annual celebration of the social sciences, the Festival of Social Science engages with audiences outside the university, and an important opportunity to demonstrate the impact of social science research on key social, economic, political and environmental issues.

Manchester Met will also be partnering again with The University of Manchester and the University of Salford, hosting events across the city at locations such as HOME and the Central Library.

We will be launching the Manchester Festival of Social Science on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Discover groundbreaking research through a series of engaging lightning talks by leading Manchester based social scientists. These talks will cover various aspects of our digital lives, including the relationship between humans and digital technology, the influence of digital media on our behaviour, and the future of digital innovation.

The Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of research and knowledge about humans and society and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022. It’s an opportunity for anyone to explore topics relating to social science- from health and wellbeing to crime, equality, education and identity- through events run by researchers from UK universities. There’s no cost to attend, and most are open to everyone, though some are aimed at specific groups.

More information about each event can be found on our Festival of Social Science webpage.
