MMU is best Uni for Rugby League
MANCHESTER Met is probably best Uni in the country to play your Rugby League.
Not only are the boys current Champions of North West One and national Cup semi-Finalists 2112/13 – they have also been voted Team of the Year by Student Rugby League.
Phil Kynaston Student Activities Manager at MMUnion said: “This is fantastic news as it is a national award and they will have been up against many other University teams all over Britain, so to win this is a great achievement.”
Coached by Leigh Centurions coach Richard Blackmore who won 25 caps for New Zealand, the team has excelled this year on and off the pitch.
Off pitch success
On the pitch, they have five students who compete for the North West representative team. Off the pitch they have raised more than £1,000, which helped them meet coaching fees, organise extra training and specialist fitness sessions.
The team is known for its inclusive attitude: As well as having students who can perform at the highest level, they support developing layers and encourage new students to take up the sport.
Phil added: “They have a real love for the sport and it is clear that they want to share this with others and get more students involved.”
They also support great socialising all year round and being part of MMURL will make you friends and ‘drinking partners’ for life!
Buzz around MMU
Outgoing Chairman Chris Martin, from Leeds, said: “As a predominantly football orientated city it is fantastic to hear that we have won after such a successful season. To play RL at MMU is a great experience and allows you to make friends for life.
There is a great buzz about MMU at the moment regarding sport and I leave the team with the knowledge that they will only progress further with the variety of talent and opportunities available.
As a team we encourage all levels of ability and would love to have a 2nd team over the next two seasons. With a successful recruitment in September MMURL will be bigger and better.”
