7 October: a joint statement from the Vice-Chancellor and the President of the Students' Union
As the war in the Middle East continues to intensify, and as we mark a year since the escalation of a tragic and devastating period in Israel and Gaza, we come together as the Vice-Chancellor and the President of the Students’ Union to reflect, share our hopes for peace, and call for an end to the violence. We recognise that many within our university community are deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict, the loss of innocent lives, and the continued detention of hostages.
The human toll of this conflict weighs heavily on us all, and we will never lose sight of the real people, families, and communities impacted. We are committed to ensuring that our campus remains a safe and supportive space for all.
At Manchester Metropolitan University and The Union, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone feels they belong, and where each member of our community can thrive and reach their full potential.
We recognise that within our community, there are diverse perspectives and deeply held emotions. We encourage open, thoughtful, and respectful dialogue, grounded in empathy and a shared humanity. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we engage with one another with kindness, sensitivity, and a commitment to understanding.
Our hearts go out to all those affected by this violence—the families, the individuals, and the communities who are suffering. We stand united in our hopes for peace.
