1. Decide on a subject area to study
Firstly, think carefully about what subject areas you want to explore. Which topics have you enjoyed studying in the past, and what interests do you have outside school or college? It’s worth keeping these things in mind to add a Clearing choice, as they could help you to achieve your career goals.
Keep an open mind during the Clearing process and take a look at courses that you might not have considered before.
2. Check the university course details
The same subject at two universities might be completely different. Take time to research the course units and the topics you will be studying. Look at one choice at a time.
Check university websites for teaching methods and delivery, as well as assessment information to find something that suits your learning style. See if the universities offer placement opportunities or study abroad options.
3. Think beyond the course
What do you want to get out of your university experience as a whole? Find out what student life is like at different universities. Make sure you research clubs, societies and sports, and see what support they offer.
Think carefully about the university location – would a campus-based or city university suit you best? If you’re travelling from home, how will you get there? And if you’re living at university, what accommodation is available?
4. Write a shortlist
Make a list of the courses you’re considering. Write down the full course name, UCAS code and contact details for each course on your list.
Weigh up the pros and cons, try and get the list down to 3-5 options and then put them in order of preference. This will give you an order for calling each university. It will also help you decide if you receive any offers.
5. Do some final checks
Things can change quickly during Clearing. Just before you call, make your last-minute checks on your application status. Do your exam results and grades meet the conditions and entry requirements for the course? Take the time to check the UCAS website too.
Courses can fill up fast during Clearing. Check the university website to make sure the course is still available before you call.
6. Get ready for questions
Read your personal statement again and be prepared to answer questions about why you are interested in the courses you’re applying for. This will help the admissions tutor decide if they can make you an offer.
It’s also useful to write down any questions you’d like to ask because it’s easy to forget in the heat of the moment.
7. Have everything to hand
Make sure your phone is fully charged. And find a calm, quiet place with good reception to make your calls.
Have your grades, personal details and UCAS ID handy, as well as any questions or notes you’ve prepared. Don’t forget a pen and paper to make notes during your call, including who you speak to, details of any verbal offers, and important deadlines.
