About my career

I chose to study at Manchester Metropolitan University because of its comprehensive Creative Advertising Strategy masters course. The programme offers a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a career in advertising. In today’s digital age, where reaching consumers is more diverse than ever, I was attracted to the idea of learning about both traditional print-based campaigns and digital media strategies.

The course’s emphasis on developing strategic thinking alongside creative skills resonated with me. I believe that effective advertising campaigns require a strong theoretical foundation to complement creative ideas. Manchester Metropolitan’s approach of integrating commercial, theoretical, and creative units ensures that students are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the industry. Gaining real-world experience through industry placements or live client briefs enhances one’s skills and prepares them for a successful career in advertising.

During my studies, I acquired a range of interpersonal and transferable skills that have proven invaluable in my career. However, among these skills, the most useful one has been conducting market research and analysing data. My lecturers provided a comprehensive education in market research methodologies and data analysis techniques, equipping me with the ability to gather, interpret, and draw insights from various sources of data. This skill has been crucial in my career, as it enables me to make informed decisions and develop effective marketing strategies based on solid evidence and analysis.

As for why I chose to study in the UK, it’s because the UK is renowned for its excellence in advertising and marketing education. The industry here is dynamic and innovative, offering numerous opportunities for growth and networking. Additionally, studying in the UK provides exposure to a diverse cultural and professional landscape, which I believe will enrich my learning experience and broaden my perspectives in the field of advertising.

After graduating, I was fortunate to land an opportunity to teach at Manchester Metropolitan University. Here, I instruct on various marketing courses, including Creative Advertising Strategy, Content Strategy, Advertising and Brands, Applied Advertising, and Managing Customer and Stakeholder Relations.

In my role, I wear many hats. I design seminar topics and activities to engage students and make learning interactive. Planning and delivering lectures and seminars allow me to impart knowledge effectively while keeping the content relevant and engaging. I also provide one-to-one academic support to students, helping them navigate complex concepts and develop their skills. Grading assignments and evaluating student performance is another crucial aspect of my job, ensuring that students receive constructive feedback to aid in their growth. Collaboration is key, and I work closely with colleagues and industry professionals to stay updated on the latest trends and insights in the marketing field.

Furthermore, I continuously update course materials based on industry insights to ensure that students are equipped with the most relevant and practical knowledge. Overall, teaching allows me to combine my passion for marketing with the opportunity to inspire and mentor the next generation of advertising professionals.

Since graduating, I have actively pursued additional qualifications and continuing professional development to further enhance my skills and advance in my career. One avenue I’ve explored is through certifications offered by platforms like Rise and LinkedIn Learning. These include Enterprise: Marketing, Creating a Communications Strategy, Create a Brand Strategy and GA4. These platforms have been particularly beneficial because students at Manchester Metropolitan University have access to them for free.

My top tip for students

My top tip for finding a graduate job or progressing your career is to actively seek out opportunities for networking and building professional relationships. While academic qualifications and skills are undoubtedly important, often it’s who you know that can open doors to exciting career prospects.

Attend industry events, career fairs, and networking mixers to connect with professionals in your field of interest. Don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni from your university, your tutors, or professionals on platforms like LinkedIn to ask for advice or informational interviews. Building a strong network can provide valuable insights into job opportunities, industry trends, and potential career paths.

Additionally, consider pursuing internships, volunteering opportunities, or freelance projects to gain hands-on experience and expand your network further. These experiences not only enhance your skills but also allow you to showcase your abilities to potential employers.

Finally, be proactive and adaptable in your job search and career development.  Don’t be afraid to explore different industries or roles that align with your interests and strengths. Keep learning, stay curious, and seize opportunities for growth and advancement whenever they arise. By being proactive, building relationships, and continuously developing your skills, you’ll increase your chances of finding fulfilling graduate opportunities and advancing in your career.
