About my career

My decision to study in the UK was born out of my experience after graduation in Nigeria where I had my first degree and an MBA. Finding a job after my first and second degree was not easy. Due to this I decided to pursue a masters degree abroad, specifically in the UK, considering the standard of education (which is about the best in the world). I applied to about five universities and I was offered admission in three - one of which was Manchester Met. I chose Manchester Met because upon graduation in MAHRM, you are automatically a CIPD associate member.

After my graduation in 2007, due to the help of the school, I was able to get a work placement with Siemens UK in Manchester for a year. After that, I was offered my first job in Nigeria in a company called Ocean Marine Security Services, which I joined in 2011 as the HR manager. I completed the assignment of setting up a HR department which was sustained until I left for a multinational hospitality company, Starwood Hotel Inc., where I was the Director of HR in charge of Nigeria.

In 2015 I decided to move from the private sector to the public sector to serve my country.

I currently work as a chief administration officer and have received many recognitions based on outstanding performance. My main duties include, training and talent management, employee relations, recruitment and much more. I also have over 10 staff reporting to me.

My study in the UK changed and enhanced my career. The skills that I gained at Manchester Met that I use the most in my career are people management, negotiation and change management.

Since graduation, I have continued my professional development by undergoing various training courses, including but not limited to: SAP Human capital management, Executive leadership, People management and finance for non finance.

My top tip for students

First, you should know what you want to do and follow it through. Don’t allow anything to discourage you.
