About my career

Studying at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK provided a unique blend of high-quality education, a diverse community, and strong industry connections. I came to the UK on a student visa in 2021 from Pakistan, and the experience has been transformative. The UK is renowned for its world-class education, cultural richness, and excellent support for international students, making it an ideal destination for both academic and personal growth.

My first significant opportunity arose just before completing my studies, when a professor offered me a project to create an interactive map visualising all the projects Manchester Met had undertaken in the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) over the past 20 years. This led to a one-year placement with a local business. The experience was incredibly valuable, providing practical skills and industry insights that complemented my academic learning. I firmly believe that undertaking a placement is essential, as it offers hands-on experience, enhances employability, and helps build a professional network.

After completing my placement and graduating with distinction, I secured a position at Chorley Council and South Ribble Council as a Business Systems Officer. The career services at Manchester Met were invaluable, offering support with CV writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies. Additionally, being involved in student societies and attending networking events helped me build a strong professional network and develop key soft skills, such as communication and teamwork. These experiences collectively contributed to my development and prepared me for the professional world.

In my current role as a Business Systems Officer, I manage the corporate GIS dataset and applications for both district councils. I also handle responsibilities typically associated with a GIS Manager, such as overseeing data quality, ensuring system integration, and providing technical support and training to staff.

At Manchester Met, I gained valuable skills in data analysis, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and data visualisation. These skills have been instrumental in my career, particularly in managing and analysing the corporate GIS datasets and applications for the district councils. The ability to interpret and present data effectively has been crucial in making informed decisions and providing insights to support various projects.

Since graduating, I have enrolled in numerous courses to upskill and attended many conferences. These opportunities have allowed me to stay updated with the latest industry trends, expand my knowledge, and continuously develop my professional skills.

My top tip for students

My top tip for finding a graduate job or advancing your career is to network actively and continuously upskill. Building a strong professional network can open doors to opportunities and provide valuable insights.

At the same time, staying updated with industry trends and continuously improving your skills through courses and training can make you a more competitive candidate. Combining these strategies can significantly enhance your career prospects.
