About my career
My decision to study in the UK was based on many objectives and elements. Being dependent on myself, exploring the culture in the UK, knowledge and experience, and learning from diverse mind-sets are some of the factors that fueled my drive to study in the UK.
I started my career four months after graduating and moving out of Manchester. I joined a boutique consultancy firm in Bahrain offering accounting outsourcing services and business plan development. During my tenure, I was able to put my academic knowledge into my career, where most of the taught curriculum in Manchester Metropolitan University were applied in work.
Following two great years of experience in my first career, I was fortunate to join Cornerstone Ventures, a boutique consultancy firm whose partners come from Bain & Co and Moelis, in Kuwait. I worked with an elite team on mandates across the GCC focusing on buy-side and sell-side transactions, as well as management consultancy such as corporate governance and business diagnostics.
Despite the short period of time, I have been able to develop myself to reach my career goal in the alternative investments field, appointed as a Manager in the Investment department at Ibdar Capital. My daily role is to review new deals, assess their viability and screen it through the firm’s investment criteria. In addition, I am responsible of managing the day-to-day current private equity and real estate portfolio in the US, UK, and the GCC, by maintaining a continuous line of communication with the asset managers, and advisers from the east to west.
I believe Manchester Met has been the building block of where I am today. Self-discipline, confidence, and the ability to work with others are a few examples of the attributes gained from my years of study at Manchester Metropolitan.
As I progressed in my career, I have taken an online course in Financial Modelling and Valuation Analyst (FMVA) from the Corporate Finance Institute. The course is very detailed, focused on real-life work. I recommend anyone pursuing his career in finance to take this course. Currently, I am pursuing my Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), which is one of the most sought professional certificate in the finance field.
My top tip for students
I consider the first five years of work as the stabilization period. During this period, try your best to jump into different firms until you find your passion. Today, finding a job can be achieved through professional networks and other online platforms. I encourage everyone to build a profile focusing on their strengths and accomplishments.
