Bursaries and grants

You do not need to repay bursaries and grants.

NHS Learning Support Fund

If you started or are continuing one of our postgraduate healthcare pre-registration courses from 1 September 2020, you can apply to the NHS Learning Support Fund.

If you’re eligible, you can get:

  • a training grant

  • parental support payments, if you have at least one dependent child under 15 years, or under 17 years if registered with special educational needs 

  • expenses for excess travel and temporary accommodation costs while you’re on your practice placement

Loans

You’ll need to pay back what you borrow, after you have graduated and are earning more than a set amount.

The loans and amounts available depend on which part of the UK you normally live in.  

England

English students can apply for tuition fee and maintenance loans.

Tuition fee loan

A tuition fee loan covers the full cost of your course.

It’s not means-tested, which means your household income does not affect how much you get.

Maintenance loan

With a maintenance loan, the money is to help with your living costs.

The actual amount you’ll get depends on your household income – your income, plus what your parents or partner earns.

How much you can borrow also depends on whether you are living at home or not.

Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales

If you’re from Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, you can apply for a postgraduate loan.
