Complete your right to study checks

Right to study checks

Before you can enrol online for your course, the University must check that you have arrived and have the correct immigration permission to study in the UK. UK Visas and Immigration call this a right to study check. We might also ask you to complete a right to study check if you are a returning student and we need to ask you for updated documentation.

If we have issued you with a CAS number, you will have received a link to complete a right to study check by email. Do not use a link forwarded to you by anyone other than the Student visa team or an educational agent, as the link will be specific to you.

If you do not need a CAS number, because you do not need a Student visa, please contact [email protected] with your MMU ID number.

You can complete a right to study check up to and including the latest date you can arrive for your course. However, you cannot enrol fully for your course until you have arrived in the UK and provided a copy of your immigration permission.

Graduate visa holders

Please note, if you hold a Graduate visa, you cannot enrol for a course of study that Manchester Met normally sponsors under the Student visa route. This means, for all the full-time courses it currently offers to international students, you must have applied for and received a decision on your Student visa application first. Please ensure you apply in good enough time to receive a decision before the latest date to arrive for your course. Most visa applications made from within the UK can take up to 8 weeks to receive a decision on.

If you are studying on a distance learning course

If you are being charged an overseas fee and are studying a distance learning course, the International Compliance team will automatically unblock your record. We check for new ‘distance learning’ records twice per week. If we have not unblocked your record by the deadline we have given you to enrol, please contact [email protected].

If you do not have a Student visa

All overseas fee-paying students need to complete a right to study check.

If you have a different type of visa from a Student visa, you need to provide your visa documentation to us during the right to study check.

If you have digital immigration permission, you must generate a share code to send us to show your immigration status.

If you need to see us in person

If you have followed all our email instructions, and there is still a problem with your right to study check that can only be resolved in person, you can see a member of the team. They will be available in the Business School Student Hub from Monday 23 September 2024 until Friday 11 October 2024 between 09:30am and 4:00pm.

Please only visit us in person if the following is the case:

  • You have completed the right to study form since arriving in the UK but have not received a response within 5 working days.
  • You or your educational agent have not received any instructions about right to study.
If you cannot arrive on time

Teaching at Manchester Met takes place on campus. The University does not have plans to extend the arrival date beyond the ‘latest date of acceptance’ detailed on your CAS.

If you feel you cannot arrive on time, please complete the right to study form via the link that the Student visa team has sent to you by email.

We will use the information to then understand what the next steps are, however in most instances this will be to defer to the next available intake if you wish to study at Manchester Met.

Online enrolment

You will complete online enrolment once you have arrived in the UK and passed your right to study check.

Online enrolment is important as this is where you will confirm your course details, your contact details and payment information for your tuition fees. It also grants you access to your University account across the digital systems you will use while a student. You should complete online enrolment prior to starting your course.

If you do not complete online enrolment every academic year by the latest date of arrival for your course, the University must cancel your enrolment record and withdraw sponsorship of any Tier 4 or Student visa permission you hold.

Please see the following link for information on completing enrolment:

Attend your course

Coming to university is a huge investment in your future. The more lectures, seminars, and study sessions you attend, the better your results will be.

Attending your course will help you adjust to university life, meet other students, make friends, and allow you to make the most of your time with us.

Important information for Student visa holders

If you have a Student visa or have a CAS number to support a Student visa application, the University must keep a record of your attendance and report any missed contact points to UKVI. If you are completing a foundation course, UKVI will also expect you to have an attendance record of 85% or above.

If your attendance is poor, you will be required to meet with the Student visa team to explain why. Depending on the outcome of this meeting, it could affect your stay and immigration status in the UK.

If we ask you to provide further documents or information, it is compulsory. We may invite you to meet with the International Compliance team if you need to provide additional documents relating to your immigration permission or if your records show you are at risk of academic failure. We may just need to know that you are in the UK and you are safe.

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students (including students here on an exchange)

You need to self-register your attendance at Manchester Metropolitan at every compulsory event on your timetable if you are studying a taught course.

    • You can register your attendance by tapping your ID card on a card reader in class
    • If a card reader is not available, you must record your attendance using the attendance app
    • You must connect to Eduroam Wi-Fi to register an attendance in the app

You can also use the app to check your attendance and to submit an absence request. You need to explain your absence if you cannot attend class.

    • If you cannot attend either an online class or class taking place on campus, please make sure you submit an absence request through the attendance app
    • You do not need to connect to Eduroam WiFi to register an absence

However, long periods of absence may affect you meeting the attendance and engagement requirements set by UKVI. If you expect your absence to be longer than 2 weeks, contact [email protected] to see how this may impact your visa.

If you cannot submit a piece of coursework or attend an examination on time, please refer to the policies, regulations and procedures relevant to your course.

Postgraduate Taught Students Completing a Dissertation

If you are completing a dissertation, you are expected to continue engaging on your course and expected to engage in person. We still class you as studying full time during the period you are completing your dissertation.

You should utilise Moodle regularly and aim to meet with your supervisor in person once per month. We will ask you to confirm your engagement on a regular basis during the period you are completing a dissertation module.

  • Postgraduate research students

If you are a postgraduate research student, your attendance is recorded by submitting research degree forms on Skills Forge at various stages of your degree.

You should meet with your supervisor every month and submit your RD9 form after the meeting. You should meet any deadlines for annual registration and annual reviews. You should also refer to the Doctoral Services for Regulations and Institutional Codes of Practice.

You should continue to meet with your supervisor until the course end date detailed on your latest CAS number. Even if you have submitted your thesis, we recommend you use your time to prepare for your viva and any potential corrections that may be required.

    Overseas Data Collection

If you are completing a research degree, or a taught dissertation, it is expected that you attend most of your supervisory sessions in person. Therefore, if you are completing a period of data collection overseas then the Student Visa team need to be informed. Please see: If your study situation changes

  • Students completing an exchange overseas

If you have a study abroad year as part of your programme, and hold a Tier 4 or Student Visa, you will be asked to attend a meeting with one of the study abroad managers and a member of the International Compliance team before you start your study period overseas. During the meeting, they will remind you of what you are required to do to keep in touch with the University during your study abroad year.
