My profile
Biography
I am Research Fellow in the School of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University.
I am currently working on a Leverhulme Trust-funded project: Mapping Interventions for NEET Young People in England (MINE). The research aims to understand the nature and scope of early interventions targeted at young people ‘at risk’ of becoming NEET and foreground the voices of the young people accessing them through an ethnographic approach.
In 2022, I obtained my doctorate in Education (EdD) from the University of Huddersfield. My thesis explored the educational decision making of high-achieving, working-class girls as they applied to high-tariff universities. My research interests include the sociology of education, social class and gender, youth studies, and creative and qualitative methods.
My professional experience includes over a decade of teaching and leadership in secondary, further and higher education.
Projects
I am currently a Research Fellow on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project Mapping Interventions for NEET young people in England (MINE). I work alongside Professor Lisa Russell (PI) at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Dr Jo Bishop and Dr Ron Thompson (CO-I) at the University of Huddersfield.
The MINE project offers the first national-level analysis of early intervention programmes in England for young people aged 14-16 considered vulnerable to becoming Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). We are recording both short and longer term outcomes for young people to explore the factors that make particular interventions effective. Additionally, we are foregrounding the voices of young people accessing provision using a longitudinal ethnographic approach. This will provide an understanding of how their experiences of early interventions connect with previous school experience and later experiences of education and the labour market.
