Research group: Histories and Cultures of Conflict
Reshaping our understanding of the relationship between war, conflict and society.
About
About our research
We explore the ways that war and conflict shape society, including the legacy of wartime transformations and challenges for post-war communities.
While we recognise the importance of conflict in history, we also aim to highlight how war is inevitably linked to peace. We study conflict resolution, pacifism and political opposition to conflict, particularly the role of activists in nations that go to war.
Current research topics include:
-
the psychology of combat, ancient, medieval, and modern
-
the study of conflict in the Middle Ages, especially the Crusades
-
ideas of neutrality and challenges to the international order
-
wartime propaganda
-
the interaction between the memorialisation of war and nation-building processes, especially in Anglo-American relations
-
racial conflict in Britain and America
-
political violence in France and Northern Ireland
-
technology and the use of animals in wartime
-
home fronts and the questions they raise about traditional narratives of war
-
religion and war
We look for opportunities to help the public engage with our research - helping them understand the many ways in which past conflicts and wars shape modern lives.
You can find information on PhD or MA by Research opportunities on our study with us page. Details of our members research interests and specialism can be found on their staff profiles.
We also publish details about projects our current PhD students are working on, and the wider community in the History Research Centre.
