Sports Scholarships awarded to elite student athletes
The latest cohort of elite student athletes have been unveiled by MMU Sport for the Manchester Metropolitan University Sports Scholars programme.
Each year, Manchester Met selects the very best in sporting talent for the scheme, which is designed to help student athletes achieve their ambitions both competitively and in the classroom.
Following a rigorous selection process, 57 individuals have been chosen to receive a dedicated sports scholarship package for the 2023/24 academic year.
The bespoke package includes nutrition, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning as well as financial support and contributions towards fees.
The scholarships are part of Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport’s mission to push boundaries, improve lives and shape society through excellence in sport and health.
Phil Cook, Head of Development at MMU Sport, said: “The growth of the scholarship programme continues to offer students excellent opportunities to excel as dual career athletes.
“These opportunities also include initiatives such as the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme dual-career accreditation, which this year welcomes 25 athletes from across the region.
“With so many great facilities and established sports partnerships in the city, the growth of the scholarship programme has secured Manchester as the destination of choice for elite sport.”
Over the years, the Scholarship Programme has supported a number of Olympians, Paralympians and world champions, with the next generation of scholars receiving the very same support and access to the best sporting facilities.
This year’s cohort of beneficiaries comprise of competitors from 18 different disciplines including rugby, swimming, cycling, netball, basketball and lacrosse.
They include the UK Number 1 Under-20 High Jumper, Halle Ferguson, and Manchester Giants basketball player and Turkish International, Idil Turk.
The programme will be supporting a number of international athletes including Maltese water polo player Benjamin Grech, multiple BUCS Billiards Champion Yan Wong, from Hong Kong, and South African Rugby Union player Bothma Oosthuizen.
Sale Sharks Women’s Alice Iwanejko and Polly Bowman have also been selected for the programme as well as four netball players from Manchester Thunder – an official Manchester Met partner – and many more talented athletes.
Scholars will have access to world-class facilities such as the Manchester Aquatics Centre, the National Cycling Centre, as well as the University’s Platt Lane Sports Complex and Institute of Sport facility.
They were welcomed to the University and onto the scheme at an event in September held at the Institute of Sport.
