Congratulations to Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malcolm Press, who has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and to gold medallist Manchester Metropolitan Paralympians, Kadeena Cox and Tully Kearney who have been awarded an OBE and MBE respectively in the Queen’s 2022 New Year Honours.

Malcolm’s CBE recognises his longstanding contribution to higher education, both through his leadership of Manchester Metropolitan University and in his national roles as a member of the Board of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, and as a trustee of the British Council, UCAS and the WWF.

Malcolm’s vision and contributions reflect his own background and interests.  As a first generation student himself, he is a passionate advocate of our First Generation campaign, which he established in 2016.  He is committed to ensuring that we transform the lives of all those with the potential to benefit from a university education, whether by taking a traditional route or via our sector leading degree apprenticeships.

As an internationally renowned ecologist and past President of the British Ecological Society, Malcolm has also made a commitment to sustainability as a defining characteristic of our University.

Malcolm places excellence in teaching and research at the heart of everything that he aspires to achieve. He recognises that progress is only possible through collective endeavour and the contributions of colleagues.

In January 2022, Malcolm joins the Board of Universities UK, where he will continue to champion the vital role that universities play in creating opportunities for individuals, communities, the economy and our society.  Delivering these transformations lies at the centre of Manchester Metropolitan’s strategy and values.

Sport Scholar, Tully Kearney, and alumna, Kadeena Cox receive their honours in recognition of services to their respective sports. Tully, who is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Human Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan’s Institute of Sport, won gold and silver medals for swimming at the 2020 Paralympics, adding to an extensive collection of World Para Swimming Championships gold medals.

Para-cyclist and para-sport sprinter, Kadeena, who studied Physiotherapy with us, won cycling gold medals at last summer’s Paralympics, setting new world records while adding to gold, silver and bronze medals from the 2016 Rio Paralympics for both cycling and sprinting. She was awarded an MBE in 2017 for her services to athletics.
