Foundation in Business, Management and Finance

Course overview

This programme will provide you with skills to understand, analyse and address the issues facing today’s businesses.

You will be introduced to business, management, economic and financial theories. You will apply this knowledge to real-life through assessment and classroom activities. 

The pathway will also enhance your skills in critical and creative thinking, research methods, information and communication technology, and the English language.

Core units

Semester one

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

Credit value: 30 

This module is designed to provide you with essential academic English and communication skills necessary for successful personal and professional practice in a globalised world. You will engage with key concepts related to diversity, equity and inclusion; sustainability; employability; and digital fluency to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening and ICT skills. You will develop an awareness of institutional culture, practices and expectations of higher education to be fully prepared for the academic rigour of your undergraduate degree.  

Critical and Creative Thinking  

Credit value: 15 

This module aims to enable you to participate in and practice independent learning tasks for deeper thought and investigation as needed for university study. You will learn how to effectively source-check and participate in a range of discussions to encourage best practice research, presentation and debating skills. You will also be encouraged to invest in strategies that will deepen understanding and interpretation of processes, motives, argument, rationale and credibility of information. This will help you to be more critical and precise in your academic arguments throughout your studies and working life.       

Research Methods    

Credit value: 15 

This module is designed to provide you with the necessary research skills to be able to succeed at undergraduate study and beyond. It aims to provide you with understanding of the range of methodologies and a solid grounding for the research skills required in undergraduate study. By encouraging you to share this knowledge in an open-class forum (small group tutorial presentations), the module also aims to develop and encourage the use of presentation skills in academic and professional-facing contexts.  

Semester two

Business and Management Concepts  

Credit value: 30 

This module provides you with an introduction to both business and management concepts to allow you to appreciate the different contexts and processes in which businesses function required in undergraduate study. The curriculum includes the internal and external operating processes, inclusive of planning and strategy, growth, marketing, human resource management (finance and accounting systems) and the importance of the management and development of human resources within organisations. You will gain a good conceptual understanding and ability to evaluate the correct use of the main aspects of business studies that will be useful for a range of future studies and careers.       

Economics and Finance Concepts

Credit value: 15 

This module equips you with an understanding of economic theories and the financial landscape whilst exploring the essential skills required to effectively analyse data for describing economic scenarios. You will gain the knowledge and competencies necessary to operate a business within the broader economic context and successfully interpret economic data.  

Core Mathematics   

Credit value: 15 

Core Mathematics has been designed to ensure that you will have the necessary basic numeracy skills needed for your first year at university. Within this module, you will practice various mathematical manipulations and apply these concepts to real-life situations, to indicate the importance and applicability of mathematics to your future degrees. You will study a wide range of core mathematics including arithmetic skills, algebra, solving equations, probability, basic statistics and data analysis.
